Japan nick it late against the Dutch

Japan have done it again and dragged themselves right back into it with a late equaliser. A header from a corner against the Netherlands was not exactly what most of us had pencilled in, but here we are.

The whole game had that weird World Cup energy where one side looks in control and then suddenly it's absolute chaos. Plenty will say the Dutch sat off too much after going ahead, while others will point straight at the subs and the keeper. Either way, Japan just never go away.

Also fair play to anyone still telling Japan to stop crossing after that. That aged like milk.

That goal changes the whole feel of the match. Japan stayed patient and kept forcing the same patterns until the Dutch finally cracked, which is exactly why people keep underrating them. The corner itself was simple, but the execution and timing were spot on.

Japan deserve huge credit for keeping the pressure on instead of panicking. The Netherlands looked comfortable for a spell, but once they started dropping deeper it felt like an invitation for trouble. That late equaliser was no accident, it was the result of persistence.

A measured take is that Japan have become one of those teams you just cannot switch off against, because even when they are not dominating every spell they keep asking the same questions until someone makes a mistake. The Netherlands probably thought they could just manage the game after going ahead, but that is such a dangerous habit in knockout football because it only takes one set piece or one lapse and suddenly the whole mood changes. And honestly that is why people love the World Cup, because you get these moments where everyone online is talking about height and crosses and then the exact thing everyone mocked turns into the equaliser, and then you get a million hot takes about subs, keepers, tactics, mentality, whether the manager has lost the dressing room, whether the commentator sounded too sad, all of it, and the actual football gets buried under the chaos

i cant lie that felt so good watching it go in after all the talk about them being too small and not being able to do anything from set pieces, proper mad scenes and now everyone looks silly

The officiating on games like this always does my head in because every little thing gets waved away until suddenly the momentum has completely swung and everyone acts surprised and you are sat there thinking how has nobody seen this coming, the Dutch were allowed to slow it down and then Japan get one bit of pressure and it is all panic and people start moaning about the keeper and the subs and the commentator and the corner routine when the real issue is the whole match management from the officials never feels consistent and it just leaves both sets of fans raging

all that talk about japan needing to stop crossing and they just went and scored from one anyway absolute comedy from the dutch really

japan just keep showing that they dont care about what people think they are gonna do and thats what makes them dangerous because everyone keeps saying stop crossing stop crossing and then they do it anyway and nick a goal and suddenly the whole match feels turned on its head
