Joao Pedro left out of Brazil squad

Joao Pedro’s official statement after being left out of the World Cup squad has kicked off a proper debate. A lot of people seem genuinely shocked, especially given the year he’s had, while others are saying the selection is about more than club form and that Brazil have gone with a different type of forward.

There’s also plenty of talk about Neymar, Martinelli, Endrick and Igor Thiago, which only adds to the confusion. Some reckon this is a football decision, others are convinced there’s a commercial angle behind it. Either way, it feels like one of those calls that will be argued about right up until the tournament starts.

What do you make of it?

On pure form, it is hard to make sense of leaving him out because the thread is full of people pointing to his year and saying he should have been close to nailed on. But I can also see the argument that international selection is not just about club output, it is about fit, role, and what the coach wants in a short tournament. If Endrick and Igor Thiago are being preferred for a specific profile, then there is at least a footballing logic there. That said, when you have fans, neutrals, and even people who do not support Chelsea saying he is a top talent, it tells you how surprising this looks. Feels like one of those decisions that will age badly if the squad struggles, and if Neymar gets nowhere near fit anyway then people are going to be absolutely raging about it for weeks, proper piss boiling nonsense

Gutted for him tbh i thought he was basically in already after the season hes had and now its just awkward because everyone is arguing about Neymar and the rest like its some sort of circus and not a proper squad selection

I was in the pub when this popped up and everyone at the bar just stopped talking for a second because it felt so out of nowhere and then the whole place just went into debate mode about whether Brazil have actually got a clue or if this is just another one of those selections that makes no sense from the outside I had one mate saying he would have him in over half the options and another saying the national team set up is different and he needs to prove it there and honestly by the end of the night nobody agreed on anything except that it is brutal for the lad and if Neymar ends up getting injured like half the thread is joking then it will look even more ridiculous and I am still trying to work out how you can leave out someone everyone is calling a top talent and act like it is normal

It is a harsh call, but not every good club season guarantees a place in a tournament squad. If the coach wants more physical presence or a different balance up front, that can explain the decision even if people disagree with it. Still, the reaction shows how highly rated he is.

The sensible point here is that squad selection is always about more than one player, and the comments suggest Brazil are weighing form, role, and preparation time. If they believe Endrick or Igor Thiago offer something different, that is at least coherent on paper. But then you look at the rest of the discussion and it turns into the usual Brazil mess with Neymar in, Neymar out, commercial decisions, sponsor chat, and everyone acting like the whole thing is fixed. It is hard to tell where football ends and politics begins with this lot and that is why the reaction is so wild

If the coach wanted a more direct number nine, then picking a physical forward over a more technical option does make some sense. But given the comments here, it is clear plenty of people expected Joao Pedro to be one of the first names on the list, so the optics are terrible.

theyve taken the piss with this one honestly how do you leave him out after that year and then act like martinelli and neymar are the obvious answers absolute clown show

The officials in this whole process are getting away with murder if this is really the logic because every time a selection like this happens they hide behind some vague idea of balance and then ignore the actual football in front of them and that is what drives people mad more than anything else because you can see a player like Joao Pedro doing the business and then somehow he is still the one left out while everyone starts talking about Neymar like it is 2016 again and the whole thing just feels rotten and political and commercial and whatever else people want to call it and if that is how they are doing it then no wonder fans are fed up with the lot of them

I dont buy the idea that it is just about one bad friendly or one short run of games because the thread itself says he had a spectacular year and that matters too and if the coach is ignoring that then its on him not the player and people pretending this is normal are chatting nonsense

People are acting like he has been poor for years when the comments literally say he had a spectacular year and that he is a very high quality player and honestly that is why this feels so wrong because he has done enough to earn trust and instead they have gone for names that are either bigger commercially or just easier to sell to the public and if you are Joao Pedro you must be sat there thinking what more can I possibly do because it is not like he has been some passenger and now every time Brazil struggle the same people will pretend this was always the sensible choice and I am sick of it already
