Joe Cole on Messi: bit of a bold one, that

i cant lie this has me proper chuckling because the confidence is so wild and you know if messi does anything at all people are going to spam this quote everywhere and if he doesnt then joe cole is going to get absolutely rinsed for weeks and thats just the cycle we are in now

I dont even know why Joe Cole keeps doing this to himself because every time he comes out with one of these massive quotes it just makes him look more and more like hes trying to be the main character of every football conversation and the thing about Messi is that you cannot just talk like he is some normal player you can shut down with a bit of bravado and a few hard tackles because that only ends one way and it is usually embarrassing for the bloke doing the talking and now everybody is going to be watching for the exact moment this quote gets made to look stupid and honestly if it does then fair enough because he walked straight into it

There is nothing wrong with a pundit showing a bit of personality, and I actually prefer that to the usual bland safe answers. But this is the sort of line that can look very silly very quickly, especially when you are talking about Messi, and once it is out there there is no taking it back, no matter how much people try to explain it away later, and that is why it feels a bit reckless even if it was meant as banter

people are acting like this is some huge insult but its just classic football chat really one bloke says something daft and everyone piles in like its the end of the world when most of the time its just empty bravado and a bit of entertainment and honestly i kind of miss when pundits used to say wild stuff without everyone needing a five minute breakdown of whether it was disrespectful

The quote only works if you think England-style punditry should always be measured, but that is not really how it goes. It is a bit of chest-thumping to build a narrative, and that is probably all it is.

if anything this just adds more pressure on whoever is supposed to be doing the actual defending because now the whole thing becomes about the quote and not the game and that is usually how these pundit soundbites end up becoming a curse rather than motivation

The line is obviously exaggerated, but that is what makes it memorable. If the point was to sound calm and rational, it failed completely, yet that is exactly why it will travel so far.

Had a mate in the pub who used to do this every big game, just sit there before kick off saying absolute mad stuff like we are going to smash them, we are going to silence this one, that one is finished and nine times out of ten he would end up hiding behind his pint by half time so this Joe Cole line has that exact same energy to me, all mouth and no idea, and I can already hear the group chat if it goes wrong because someone will be clipping this and sending it round for months, proper pub banter stuff that
