Madrid close in on Konaté on a free

Real Madrid being linked with Konaté on a free feels exactly like the kind of move they keep getting away with. If this goes through, it is another huge name added without paying a fee, and you can already see why people are calling it a smart bit of business.

At the same time, there are a few question marks. Some are saying he has had a mediocre season, others think he could look much better in La Liga and with the right partner beside him. Madrid apparently want at least two or three defenders, so this might just be the first step rather than the full answer.

Either way, it is hard not to think Madrid have once again spotted an opportunity and moved early. For Liverpool fans especially, this one will sting a bit more than usual.

if they build the back line around him and another proper organiser then he can look miles better, but if they expect him to be the main man straight away itll be a mess because hes at his best when someone else is covering the traffic

proper annoying seeing this happen again tbh because you know theyll sell it as some masterclass and half the league will just shrug but it still feels like theyve nicked a really useful defender for nothing and that hurts more than a big fee somehow

He is probably best viewed as part of a unit rather than the unit itself. If Madrid want two or three defenders, that makes sense, because his value comes from having structure around him. On a free, the risk is pretty low.

real madrid just hoovering up every decent free agent like theyve got a magnet in the boardroom and liverpool fans have to sit there watching the same film on repeat absolutely brutal

The fee changes everything here because if a club like Real can get a defender on a free and still chase more pieces for the back line then the squad planning angle is obvious, but people are acting like that automatically means he is a world beater or that Liverpool have been robbed blind and it is not that simple. He has had a rough season, sure, and he can look shaky when the whole team is off it, but he is still a strong profile to work with if the system suits him and if there is a proper partner next to him. What gets me is the timing of it all, because it always feels like Madrid can just wait around and then pounce when everyone else is dithering and then suddenly it is a bargain and a masterstroke and the rest of us are supposed to clap like idiots. It is maddening and I am already tired of the discourse and the inevitable clips and the inevitable

i was in the pub the other night and some lad who barely knows football was saying madrid always get their way with transfers and i had to laugh because now it looks like he was right again, i swear this club has some kind of cheat code for free deals and opportunistic signings, every time you think a player is locked somewhere else they just appear out of nowhere and suddenly its a done thing and everyone pretends it was obvious, and for liverpool this one must feel especially annoying because it is the kind of transfer that leaves you staring at the screen thinking how the hell did that happen again and again and again
