Mannheim v Kaiserslautern derby chaos

I cant lie this sort of thing always makes me laugh because you know full well everyone there will be telling the story for years and acting like it was normal, meanwhile the rest of us are just sat here watching horses and police and wondering how it got to this point
 
People acting like this is some disgrace are missing the point completely because derby football is supposed to be hostile and ugly and full of noise and tension and if you strip all of that away then what are you even left with, just another sterile matchday where everybody claps politely and goes home early, no thanks, this is exactly the sort of madness that gives these games identity and the fans who turn up to it know what they are getting into so all the pearl clutching is a bit much if you ask me
 
The police and horses change the whole visual of the game, but it still feels like a football match with real edge. That kind of atmosphere can lift an otherwise ordinary fixture into something memorable.
 
The officials always seem to end up in the middle of this sort of nonsense and then act surprised when it all boils over, as if nobody could see it coming from a mile away, you get the heavy police presence, the tension, the horses, and then everyone starts pretending this is some isolated incident rather than the inevitable result of cramming a derby like this into a pressure cooker and hoping it behaves itself, absolute joke from start to finish and the people in charge will still pat themselves on the back afterwards
 
At first glance it looks funny and chaotic, but there is real history in pictures like this and that is why people keep sharing them. You can tell the crowd and the authorities both know exactly what kind of afternoon this is going to be, and then it just escalates into total madness, proper football heritage if you like, but also completely mad and honestly a bit much when you think about it, because nobody looks remotely in control and that is half the problem
 
Some of you lot would probably complain if a derby had too much atmosphere as well because apparently football is only good when everyone sits there quietly and behaves like its the theatre, absolute nonsense
 
There is definitely a charm to how raw this looks, and that is why people enjoy derby pictures like this. But you can also understand why others see it as total overkill, because it is one thing to have intensity and another to have the whole thing look out of control.
 
nah i dont buy the idea that this is some glorious tradition just because it looks mad on camera, a lot of this is just people making a mess and calling it passion, football should have edge but not this much nonsense
 
There is a difference between an intense derby and one that feels completely unhinged, and this image definitely sits in that second category. Still, I can see why people are fascinated by it because it captures a kind of football energy that you do not get in tidy, overmanaged matches, but then you look at the horses, the police, the whole circus, and you start wondering whether everyone involved has just accepted chaos as part of the product and honestly maybe they have because the reaction to it is always the same, people laugh, people rage, people call it proper football, and then it happens again and again and again and it never gets any less ridiculous
