Martinelli wins it late for Brazil

Brazil nick it at the death and Japan are left with another brutal late collapse. It feels like one of those games where the whole mood flips in a second and suddenly all the talk is about one mistake and one finish.

Martinelli getting the winner is a big moment for him, and the assist was proper quality too. Still, Japan will be absolutely sick after that, because again it comes right at the end and again it feels avoidable.

Stoppage-time winners always hit different, but this one will sting for a while if you're a Japan fan. Football can be ruthless like that.

Japan really saw the clock hit 90 and decided that was enough football for the day, absolute generosity merchants from them again, you cant keep doing that and acting shocked when the other side takes the piss

Brazil looked dead for spells but that late quality changes everything. Japan will be gutted because it felt there for them until one lapse, tbh

The officials always seem to let these games drift in the last few minutes and then suddenly the whistle is nowhere to be seen when a team is hanging on, it is ridiculous, players are getting shoved, the ball is pinging around, everyone is on edge and the ref just waves play on until the inevitable happens, then we act surprised, but the whole thing gets worse when the added time is handled like a suggestion rather than a proper period and you end up with another side punished for one tiny mistake after the clock should have been managed better, it is just chaos and the referee crew always look like they have no clue how to control the final moments

Japan were organised for most of it, but one lapse at the end changes the entire story. Brazil also had the quality to punish it when the chance came, and that is often the difference at this level.

Japan were sitting too deep after the equaliser and it invited pressure, once you keep dropping off like that the box gets crowded and someone like Martinelli only needs one clean touch to finish it imo

Was in the pub for this and the whole place just went silent when that went in, proper weird moment because everyone had sort of accepted Japan were going to see it out and then one ball in behind and it is all over, the bloke next to me had backed Japan and nearly put his pint through the table, I swear every time I watch a late goal like that there is some random lad shouting that it is offside before the replay even starts and then he has to sit there looking like a mug, football is just brutal sometimes

Brazil looked like they were running out of ideas for a while, but once the move opened up you could see the quality come through. Martinelli did well with the finish and the assist was excellent, and for Japan it is just another devastating late moment, you can feel the whole stadium drop and it must be horrible for them, honestly they have to be wondering what more they can do at this point because it keeps happening and it keeps hurting and it just feels so unfair

People will talk about the mistake and the late goal but Japan did not roll over here, they stayed in the game and made Brazil work for every bit of it, and that matters, it is easy to laugh when a team concedes at the end but they were right there and one poor decision should not erase everything they did before that, football is just cruel sometimes and Japan keep getting done by the smallest things and it is bloody miserable to watch

Japan had the shape, the discipline and enough control to make this a proper contest, and for long spells Brazil looked frustrated. But when you give a side that much talent one clean opening in stoppage time, you are asking for trouble, and that is exactly what happened here, one touch, one assist, one finish, and the whole thing flips, it is such a hard lesson but also such a familiar one and honestly Japan must be absolutely sick of seeing this pattern because it keeps happening and it keeps feeling like the same nightmare over and over
