Messi and Yamal photo coincidence is unreal

The internet has absolutely lost its head over this and I cant even blame them because it is the exact sort of thing football fans will turn into a legend by lunchtime, one photo and suddenly everyone is an astrologer, a mathematician and a film critic all at once, proper taking the piss tbh
 
The sensible point is that a lot of extraordinary things can happen in a sport as chaotic as football and we only notice the ones that fit a story. But then you look at this particular image and it is impossible not to spiral a bit because it lines up so neatly with what people already think about Messi and Yamal. And once that happens, the whole thing stops being just a photo and turns into folklore, which is probably why everyone is so obsessed with it. I also think people underestimate how much football fans love a bit of theatre, because the second you give them a clean symbolic image they will build a whole religion around it, and then somebody will bring up shirt numbers and birthdays and the next thing you know the thread has become a shrine to coincidence and I am not even mad about it
 
its mad but people are acting like the universe handpicked him when really it was just a raffle and a camera and a load of luck but football fans cant help themselves once theres a neat story in front of them they start building whole myths around it and now everyones talking about signs and fate and all that
 
It is a brilliant story and I get why people are obsessed with it because the image is doing a lot of heavy lifting all by itself and it feels like something that should not exist in real life, but I also think football fans are desperate for meaning in everything and that is why this has exploded so hard. Still, when you line up Messi at 19, Yamal at 19, the same number, the same sort of spotlight, and the fact that the photo has become this iconic thing years later, you can understand why people are getting carried away, because it really does look like the sort of setup a writer would be told to tone down, and yet here we are, staring at it like absolute fools because it feels too neat to be random and too random to be neat and I swear this sport is just taking the piss sometimes
 
It is an incredible coincidence, but I still think people should be careful about reading too much into it. Football loves a story, and this one is just unusually neat.
