Messi breaks the World Cup record again

I actually think Austria will be kicking themselves because for long spells they did not look completely overwhelmed and then one tiny lapse and he punishes it in that exact way he has done for years, but that does not mean they were rubbish or that the game was some total embarrassment, it just means you cannot give him that kind of moment in a match like this and expect to survive it, he is still outrageously good and the finish is top class and the dummy is great but people are acting like the other side forgot how to play football when really they just got caught once against one of the best ever and that happens, it is football, it is brutal, and honestly the way everyone instantly turns it into a meme fest is a bit much because Austria have had to deal with a player who can do this to anyone and that should count for something even if it is frustrating to watch from their point of view

I was in the pub for this and the whole place just went absolutely mental when it went in because there was one bloke near the dartboard who had been saying all night that Messi only does it in easy games and then the ball breaks, he does that little move, and suddenly everyone is on their feet shouting and laughing and the same bloke just sat down and stared into his pint like his whole evening had been ruined and I have never seen a room turn that fast over one goal before

Argentina looked calm and controlled before the goal, but Messi was always the danger. Once he found that space, the outcome felt inevitable.

I dont think this was just Austria switching off for no reason because Messi makes teams look stupid by forcing one bad decision and then the whole shape collapses after that so saying they were just awful is a bit lazy really

The main issue was the spacing in front of the defence. Messi had too much room to receive and turn, and that is usually enough for him.

Someone in the match thread probably typed this exact goal was coming and now they are acting like a prophet which is honestly hilarious because the rest of us were just trying to keep up while Messi did his usual cheat code nonsense and now the whole internet is in shambles again

Honestly the criticism of Messi after something like that always feels a bit weird because people will pick on every tiny part of the move and ignore the fact that he creates this kind of moment so often that it almost becomes normal and that is exactly why he is so ridiculous, defenders know what is coming, keepers know what is coming, everyone in the stadium knows what is coming and he still finds a way to make it happen with that little bit of craft and calm and timing and then one touch later the whole place explodes and people start screaming about history and the record and the next big milestone and all that is fair enough because he has earned it but some of the reactions are like he personally offended the opposition by being good and it just makes me laugh because at this stage if you leave him that much room you are basically asking for trouble and Austria found that out the hard way and now everyone is posting the same shocked reaction like the man has not spent his entire career doing exactly this

You can argue about the build up all you want, but the finish and the composure are the main story here. He has made a career out of moments like this and even now it still looks absurdly natural imo
