Messi has absolutely gone there

I will say this for England though, they were never as far off as people are making out and the game was still there for them if they had shown a bit more bravery, but instead the whole thing became about fear and reacting and that is why Argentina ended up looking more settled and more dangerous, which is fine, that happens, but the constant pile on is annoying because it turns every defeat into a joke about the badge rather than the actual football, and half the people laughing would be crying if their own team got talked about like this, so yes Argentina can say they are better and yes Messi can enjoy it, but the England side were not some tinpot pub team and people need to stop pretending they were

I think you are missing the point a bit. It is not about one quote, it is about years of people trying to twist everything he does.

nah i dont buy the whole england were disgraceful thing because argentina still had to go and do the business and they did, if youre the better side then show it and they did exactly that so the quote is fair enough even if it stings

england fans really spent all week acting like this was a gimme and now theyre acting shocked that messi has a bit of swagger about it, if you talk before the game you have to take it after and thats all this is

england got their usual tournament reality check and now the internet is pretending they were robbed by the football gods instead of just being outplayed lol

Argentina looked more organised and more decisive when it mattered. England had spells, but they never looked like the side controlling the bigger moments, and that is why the quote lands so hard.

Messi is one of those players who can say almost anything after a win and people will still argue about the tone instead of the truth. Argentina beat England, they looked the more complete side, and he is clearly enjoying the fact that everyone who spent weeks talking nonsense now has to sit there and swallow it. Fair enough as well, because football discourse has become so obsessed with narratives that people forget the actual match, and when the result goes against the loudest crowd they suddenly start crying about respect and sportsmanship as if they were being polite before kick off. It is not even that deep, he won, they lost, and now he gets to remind them, simple as that, and if you dont like it then maybe dont spend half your life writing England are favourites every summer and calling everyone else overrated because this is exactly what you get when it goes wrong and honestly its glorious

On a tactical level Argentina had better control of the central areas and England never really found a way to change the rhythm. That is why the quote works, because it is not just banter, it reflects what happened on the pitch. But people will still turn it into a personality debate because football discussion is basically just tribal shouting now and honestly its exhausting and hilarious and the same fans who say be humble are the first ones celebrating with their boots on your throat when it goes their way so yeah say what you want messi

Argentina clearly had the stronger case on the day, but the quote is still meant to wind people up. That is probably why it is spreading so fast.

I was in the pub for this and you could feel the mood change the second people realised Messi had come out with that line because one lad on our table was already doing the full England were robbed routine before anyone had even finished their pint and then the rest of us were just laughing because he had spent the whole week saying it was a dead cert and now suddenly it was about respect and context and all that nonsense, proper classic football chat really, everyone becomes a philosopher after a defeat and a comedian after a win, and by the end he was just staring at the screen with his arms folded while the rest of us were saying well if you dont want to hear it then maybe dont lose and give him the chance to say it in the first place, absolute scenes
