Messi says he’s finished it at the World Cup

its mad because once a player gets to that point the whole conversation changes and people stop asking can he do it and start asking how much more can he enjoy it and messi is basically there now he has already won the thing that used to hang over him and you can see it in the way he plays, no panic no forcing it just taking what the game gives him and thats probably worse for everyone else because a relaxed messi is still a nightmare and probably the closest thing football has to cheating without actually cheating

People keep talking about Messi like the whole story is over and maybe in a trophy cabinet sense it is but the way he is still playing makes me think some lads just need a different kind of motivation and he is one of them, because he does not need to carry the same burden anymore and that is why he looks so much sharper in moments, but then you get fans acting like every touch is some spiritual event and every run is a sign from the heavens and it gets a bit much honestly, like yes he is brilliant, yes he has already done more than anyone else, but can we stop pretending he is a saintly wizard sent to earth to solve football because sometimes he just looks like a very very good footballer with absurd balance and vision and the rest of us are left arguing about whether he is finished or not when the answer is obviously no, he is just less stressed and more annoying for defenders and that is enough

I was in the pub the other night and there was this older bloke who does not really watch football anymore but he heard someone mention Messi and immediately started going on about how he used to argue with his mates for years over Messi and Ronaldo and how now he just enjoys the fact that one of them can say something like this and it somehow sounds completely normal, and everyone at the bar was nodding along even the lads who only care about the Premier League and fantasy points because there is something funny and oddly satisfying about a player just declaring the whole thing complete while still being out there like he is on a Sunday kickabout, and the best part was this one fella said it was like finishing your pint and then finding another pint in the same glass and I have not stopped laughing since because that is basically Messi now isnt it

From a footballing point of view, this is what happens when a player reaches total closure with the international game. The pressure drops, the decision making simplifies and the confidence becomes almost dangerous for opponents. He is no longer chasing validation, which makes every touch look cleaner and more deliberate.

I get why people are calling it New Game+, but I also think there is a genuine human side to it. He has already had the defining moment, so anything else is a bonus, yet he still seems committed enough to keep going for the team. That balance is rare and pretty admirable.

He has basically reached the point where football is just another chapter for him, and that is why he looks so relaxed now. I do think people overdo the myth a bit sometimes, but the quote itself is spot on and pretty funny imo

What stands out to me is that he is describing the end of a chase, not the end of a career, and those are two very different things. Once the chase is over a player can actually become more effective because the mind stops dragging the body around, and with Messi you can see that in the way he plays now, less desperation, more control, more economy, more certainty. But of course the internet turns everything into a meme and suddenly he is in side quest mode or DLC mode or whatever else people want to call it, and fair enough because it is funny, yet there is still something serious underneath it because he has genuinely reached a place no one else really gets to reach. And then you remember that people once spent years trying to frame his international career as incomplete and now he is the one saying the game is already finished, which is just savage honestly

the thing about messi is that people keep trying to separate the player from the story like there is some clean line between what he did on the pitch and what it meant to everyone watching but there isnt really because when a guy spends that long carrying a national team conversation on his back and then eventually just says yeah the little game is over im done it lands like a full stop on an entire era and thats why everyone is doing the new game plus jokes because it feels like he has already seen the credits and somehow still loaded back in with a maxed out save file and now he is just strolling around making defenders look stupid for fun and honestly fair enough because if anyone earned the right to be bored with football it is him and yet he still isnt bored which is the most annoying part for everyone else because even when he is supposedly done he is still the best thing on the pitch and that is just ridiculous and i love it and hate it at the same time
