I actually think people are underselling how much it matters that Argentina can now just play without that old shadow hanging over them because for years every tournament got turned into a Messi verdict and that is a horrible way to watch football, you can see the difference in how the whole team carries itself when the biggest question is gone and that should be credited to the squad as much as to him, because he is not out there by himself and he never was, he is just the obvious centre of gravity and when that centre of gravity stops being a burden the whole thing becomes more fluid, more relaxed, more dangerous. So yes the jokes about side quests and new game plus are funny and deserved, but there is also a real football reason why this version of him is still so effective and it is because the pressure has been lifted and the team around him can just breathe, and anyone acting like that is somehow a lesser Messi is missing the point completely because a player who can enjoy the game after reaching the summit is still a problem for everyone else and probably even more of one
 
A measured way to look at it is that he has reached the point where the individual achievement no longer needs to be chased for validation, so the rest of his career is really about enjoyment and contribution rather than completion. That is why the quote lands so well, because it sounds like someone who genuinely understands the end of a long journey and is comfortable with it. Of course the internet immediately turns that into game mode jokes and fair enough, but it also says something about how unusual his career has been that this sort of line feels completely believable. And then you end up in the weird football tangent where everyone starts comparing eras and trophies and pressure and somehow it becomes a debate about whether a player can ever truly be finished, which is nonsense because football never really lets anyone be done, it just keeps pulling them back in for one more match, one more run, one more ridiculous moment
