Messi’s hat-trick has everyone losing it

Absolute scenes from Messi again. At 39 next week and he goes and bags a hat-trick like it is nothing, with people already talking about him tying the World Cup goal record and just generally reminding everyone who he is.

What stands out most is how inevitable it all feels. The crowd, the teammates, even the opposition seem to know where it is going and somehow he still makes it work. You just do not get many nights like this, especially at this stage of his career.

If you are a Messi fan this is basically dreamland, if you are not then it is probably one of those nights you just have to sit back and respect. Either way, the reaction has been completely unhinged in the best possible way.

Was in the pub when it went in and the whole place just erupted like someone had scored a last minute winner in a cup final even though it was nowhere near that dramatic, old lads at the bar were shouting GOAT at the telly and the young lads were just laughing because what else can you do when a bloke is nearly 39 and still doing this sort of thing, proper madness really and you could tell everyone knew they were watching something ridiculous

Argentina just funnel everything through him when it matters and it still works because the movement around him is so tidy, once he gets that little pocket you may as well start writing the headline already no one is stopping that kind of finish

Honestly I do not even know what to say anymore because every time people try and put a ceiling on him he just goes and does something mad like this and it is not even about the goals on their own it is the way he makes it all look like he is having a kickabout in the park with his mates while everyone else is playing for their lives, 39 next week and still out here making defenders look like they have never seen a football before, the records, the hat-tricks, the timing of it, all of it is getting silly now and people will still argue about it like there is some debate left which is the funniest part of all really

You could see the whole side looking for him every time they got near the box, and once that starts it becomes a one man show tbh

I know everyone is going to turn this into another Messi love-in and fair enough because the numbers are insane, but spare a thought for Algeria here because they are the ones stuck trying to deal with one of the greatest players ever at the exact moment he decides to have one of those nights where everything lands for him, and people act like that is a disgrace on the defending side when really it is just elite quality doing elite things, you cannot legislate for a player who keeps finding the same space and the same finish over and over again and makes it look simple while you are chasing shadows, so yeah the scoreline hurts but getting done by this version of Messi is not exactly shameful is it

The measured point is that this is what longevity at the very top actually looks like, not some sentimental farewell tour but a player still dictating games and producing the same decisive moments. Then you remember how many years people have been saying he is done and how every time he just finds another gear and suddenly the whole discourse collapses again because there is no neat way to explain a genius who keeps embarrassing normal ageing patterns

The most striking part is how ordinary it looks when he does it. He is not blasting impossible shots every time, he is just always in the right place at the right moment and the game bends around him. That is what makes him so hard to deal with, because the threat is constant rather than flashy.

People will pretend this was some magical team effort but the truth is Messi just took over and everyone else was basically there to pass him the ball and watch, which is fine when it works but it does my head in when one player gets all the glory for stuff the rest of the side had to set up, and then you get the usual endless think pieces about why he is the greatest and why everyone should bow down, like yes he is obviously brilliant but the way some people act as if the match only exists because of him gets on my nerves after a while because it turns into worship instead of football
