Morocco edge Netherlands on pens in a mad one

The Netherlands never looked fully comfortable once the match became about managing risk rather than creating chances. Morocco were happy to make it ugly, and that meant the game was always going to be decided by details and nerve. In that kind of match, the more committed side often gets rewarded.
 
I was in the pub and everyone around me had gone from shouting at the screen to just laughing because it got that ridiculous, one lad kept saying every pen was worse than the last and he was basically right, the whole place felt like a fever dream by the end and then when the winner went in there was this weird mix of cheers and groans because even the neutral lads didnt know whether to celebrate the drama or just feel sorry for whoever had to watch that mess back later
 
It was ugly, but knockout football often is when both teams are wary of making the fatal mistake. Morocco handled that pressure better, and the Netherlands never really found a way to impose themselves. The result feels fair even if the quality was poor.
 
There is a point here about how little margin there is in knockout football when both teams are this cautious, because once it becomes about game management and nerves, you can almost predict that one mistake or one bad decision will decide everything, and the Netherlands seemed to spend the whole night trying not to lose rather than trying to win, which is a dangerous way to live in a tournament like this, but then I keep coming back to how bizarre the penalties were and how everyone in the stadium and online seemed to lose their minds at once because it felt like the whole match had been building toward pure chaos and then it just exploded into confusion and moaning and people blaming coaches and keepers and stutter steps and all the rest of it
 
Morocco just wanted it more and that is the end of it for me, the Dutch can talk about bad luck and penalties all they want but they were flat and hesitant and that is on them, you could see the fear in it and it got worse as the game went on and honestly it was maddening to watch because they had the tools to do more but they just sat there and let it slip and slip and now everyone will remember the misses and the nervy tactics and the awful shootout and it is going to hurt for ages because they really did throw it away
