Mourinho on squad management and frustration

There is a reasonable point buried in the quote, even if Mourinho phrases it in his usual dramatic way. A squad full of elite players needs clarity about rotation and expectations, otherwise frustration spreads quickly and selection becomes a bigger story than the football itself.
 
The tactical angle is simple really, if he has depth then he can keep the level high by rotating without lowering standards, but the risk is that you get a few unhappy stars who stop buying into the press and the intensity, and then the whole thing becomes a mess
 
People keep saying this is a direct shot at one player and I dont buy it, it sounds more like he is talking about the whole group and the need to keep everyone aligned because a big squad only works if the disappointed lads do not become a problem
 
Mourinho is basically telling everyone that he wants a squad where nobody gets too comfortable and that is exactly why this will be fascinating because the moment a star player feels hard done by the story becomes about authority and control rather than football and that is where Jose lives, he thrives on the tension and the power struggle and the little public comments that make everybody guess who he means and what the reaction will be, but at the same time it is also very easy for this to backfire because if the results dip then the whole hard man routine looks a bit dated and suddenly the players are the ones rolling their eyes while the press ask the same questions every week and the whole thing turns into a soap opera
 
hes basically saying the lads need to behave or theyll be benched and tbh thats fair enough if youve got a stacked squad you cant be carrying sulkers around every week
 
I get why people are making it about Vini, but it could just as easily be about keeping the whole squad honest. Mourinho always talks like this when he wants everyone to know there are consequences, imo
 
The key is not the quote itself, it is whether he can create a system where the players accept rotation without feeling punished. If he gets that balance right, the squad stays competitive; if not, frustration becomes the story instead of the football.
 
Honestly the officials are going to be under a microscope every single time Mourinho is involved because the second something goes against him he turns it into a whole event and the whole bench starts losing their minds and then the media run with it for days and it becomes about referees instead of football and thats exactly why people get sick of watching his sides sometimes because even a normal decision gets treated like a conspiracy and you just know if there is one bad call in a big game he will be on the touchline losing it and making the entire thing about himself and the ref and the supposed injustice and then everyone else has to pretend that is normal
