Neto’s dribble was brilliant, then the finish was not

He is one of those players who makes analysis feel pointless for about five seconds because the raw talent is obvious, the acceleration, the balance, the way he can shift the defender and create a lane all of that is proper top level stuff, but then the final action arrives and it is just so wasteful that you are left arguing with yourself about whether the run was actually good or just entertaining, and I think that is why people keep going back and forth on him, because he gives you enough to dream and then just enough to be annoyed, and when you are watching it live that is agony, absolutely agony, because you know the pass was on and the better choice was staring him in the face and he still chose the stupid option and now everyone is shouting at the TV
 
A simple cutback would probably have been the best option there. Once he had the defender turned, the move was already successful and there was no need to force the shot from that angle.
 
Seen lads in the pub do the exact same thing after three pints where they beat one man, think they are prime Ronaldo and then absolutely leather it into the side netting while the whole room just goes silent for a second and then everyone starts laughing, and that is why this clip is so funny because it has that same energy, all swagger for five seconds and then the ending is a complete shambles, reminds me of Sunday league more than anything else, one of those moments where you know the player is talented but you also know he is about to make a meal of the final touch and everyone around you is already shaking their head before the ball has even left his foot
 
The run itself is exactly the sort of thing that gets coaches excited because it breaks structure and forces defenders to react, but once you start thinking about the wider picture you can also see why people are annoyed, because it is the wrong choice in that moment and it wastes the advantage, and then somehow we end up talking about winger culture, decision making, and whether modern football rewards individual flair too much, which is probably a bit much for one dribble, but that is football discourse for you, one minute its a great bit of skill and the next everyone is acting like the game has been solved by a bad shot
