Neymar in tears after Norway loss

I watched the clip twice and each time it got more ridiculous, first the mouthy bit then the tears and I just sat there thinking mate you cannot write this stuff, absolute meltdown

The key detail is that the emotion only becomes a story because of the earlier behaviour. Once he has already turned the moment into a bit of theatre, the reaction after the loss is always going to look worse.

There is an argument that the reaction is being judged more harshly because it happened in public and because people already had an opinion on him, and that is fair enough, but the problem is he keeps creating these moments where he invites the scrutiny and then acts shocked when it lands on him, and at some point the criticism stops being about one clip and starts being about the whole pattern of behaviour, the constant fronting up, the constant need to be seen, the constant self importance, and I think that is why so many people are not just laughing but almost relieved to see him brought down a peg because they feel like he has been asking for it for years and years and now he is sat there in tears while everyone else says well there you go then

He is still a brilliant player and nobody sensible is denying that, but moments like this are exactly why the reaction is so split because the football and the personality keep clashing in the most obvious way possible, one minute he is producing the kind of drama that gets everyone watching and the next minute he is the one getting laughed at for it, and honestly he has brought a lot of that on himself by acting like every touch is a celebration and every opponent is an extra in his story, so when it ends in tears people are always going to say you made your bed now lie in it, harsh maybe but that is where he has landed

I get why people are laughing at the contrast, because the timing makes it look almost scripted. At the same time, a loss like that can hit any player hard, so the tears themselves are not the surprising part.
