Nico unveiled at St. James’ Park

I dont buy the idea that this is some huge City disaster because sometimes a player just doesnt fit and thats that, it does not mean the whole club is broken or that every sale is a mistake. Newcastle are the ones who can make the most of it if the role suits him
 
People are too quick to call this a failure from City when the truth is he might simply be better elsewhere and that happens all the time, it does not mean the club are clueless or that the player was useless, it means football is messy and systems matter and not every signing is going to look perfect in hindsight. Newcastle getting him in front of a packed stadium is obviously a good look and fair play to them for creating that kind of energy, but I also think some of the City criticism is lazy because they did at least recognise he wasnt the right fit for what they wanted. If anything the lad deserves credit for sticking with it and now getting a proper welcome instead of being written off by people who barely watched him. He is not some villain or miracle worker, he is just a player who needed a different environment and I dont get why that is so hard for people to accept when every other week they preach about tactics and roles and then reduce everything to banter and shouting and honestly it is exhausting
 
newcastle fans are absolutely loving this and fair play to them because it feels like they finally get a bit of momentum in a window and the atmosphere in that ground must be class for a player who wants to feel wanted. city fans can moan all they like but if he wasnt the right fit then thats that and no amount of crying changes it
 
There is a strong emotional angle to this because he is being welcomed into a genuinely big atmosphere, but it is also worth remembering that a crowd unveiling does not guarantee anything. Newcastle have made a smart-looking move if he settles quickly, while City may simply feel they have corrected a mistake rather than made one.

On paper this is a pretty straightforward case of a player leaving one environment and potentially thriving in another, and that is usually where the sensible analysis should stop. If he was not a natural fit for the role City wanted, then moving him on makes sense, and if Newcastle can use him properly then it is a win for them. But football never stays sensible for long, does it, because the second a crowd turns up and the cameras roll everyone starts talking about statement signings and disasters and how one club has been clever while the other has been stupid and all of that is just noise until the games start, and yet I still cannot help thinking City might regret this if he settles quickly because it has that annoying feeling of a player being allowed to leave just as people realise what he could have been
 
This looks like a good move for Newcastle because the player seems wanted and the crowd is clearly buying into it. City probably feel they have moved on from a bad fit, but the optics make it look like Newcastle have won the moment imo
 
The key question is whether Newcastle can give him a clearer role than City did. If they can, this could look like a very smart piece of business rather than just a flashy unveiling.
