Nine English teams in Europe next season

Was in the pub last night and everyone was talking about it like it was some kind of end of the world thing, one lad was saying his club can barely survive a cup run never mind Europe and another was just laughing because he said the broadcasters will be rubbing their hands together, then the old boy at the bar comes out with the usual line that football was better when there were less games and less nonsense and for once I kind of agreed with him because if you are a normal fan trying to get to away games and work the next day this schedule just gets silly and expensive and tiring and half the time the football on offer is just two tired teams lumping it about anyway

The bigger point is that European qualification is starting to look normal for a huge chunk of the league. That changes expectations for recruitment, rotation, and even how clubs plan their seasons.

Honestly im just tired of seeing the same conversation every year about fixtures and fatigue and then nothing changes and the clubs still act surprised when their players are cooked, like what did you think was gonna happen when you keep stacking midweek games on top of travel and cup runs and international breaks

the real super league was apparently just the premier league all along and now the rest of europe can sit there watching us argue about monday nights and who gets stuck with neville on comms

I get why people are excited about the novelty of it but from a fan point of view this is just another sign that the calendar is being stretched until it snaps because every club wants the money from Europe and every broadcaster wants more content and every supporter is just left trying to keep up with another set of kick off times and another round of travel and another excuse for the same pundits to moan about intensity while the games themselves get worse and more fragmented and the whole thing starts feeling less like football and more like a scheduling exercise designed by people who never have to actually go to the matches

It does feel like a tipping point for the league, because once this many clubs are in Europe the ripple effect hits everyone else too. Even the teams outside the competitions will be dealing with rotation-heavy opponents and awkward kick-off times, tbh

On paper this should be a sign of strength, and in some ways it is, but it also feels like the league is heading towards a season where everybody is running on fumes by spring. The depth issue is already obvious at a lot of clubs and now you are asking them to handle even more European nights, more travel and more pressure, and honestly it is a bit much, proper ridiculous if you ask me because the football will suffer and then everyone will act shocked when the standard drops and the injuries start piling up and the managers are left throwing youth players into the fire like that is some kind of clever plan

It is easy to focus on the number, but the quality of the squads will matter more than anything else. Some clubs will use the extra matches to build momentum, while others will simply be stretched too thin. Either way, the league table could look very different by the end of the season.

How are the officials supposed to keep up with all this if they can barely handle one match a weekend without some daft decision ruining it and now we are adding more European games and more pressure and more nonsense and somehow the same people will still pretend the standard is fine when every week there is a handball nobody understands or a foul given for breathing near someone and then the whole debate gets buried because there are too many fixtures for anyone to even remember what happened last week

The broader point here is that English clubs are now so dominant in terms of access to Europe that the domestic league almost becomes its own feeder system for the continent, which is impressive in one sense and ridiculous in another. You can already see the pressure this puts on managers to rotate, on squads to be deeper, on fans to accept worse kick-off times, and on broadcasters to milk every last drop out of it. Still, part of me cannot help laughing because the same people who spent years telling us the league was the best in the world are now acting shocked that it has turned into an all-consuming monster that eats its own weekends and spits out tired players

I know people want to say this is too much and that it will be chaos, but for the clubs actually involved it is brilliant and they have earned it. Palace winning a trophy and getting Europe is exactly what people love about football, and Bournemouth and Sunderland being in the mix shows the door is not just open for the same old names. Yes it will be hard, yes the schedule will be brutal, but that is the reward for doing well and if your club is not there then maybe the problem is on the pitch not in the calendar, simple as that
