Olise’s World Cup assist record is madness

It is actually a really interesting record because it shows how dominant one creative player can be in a tournament, and Olise has clearly been central to France going forward. But the thread is already turning into people reducing it to stat padding and that is such a lazy way to talk about a record like this, because at the end of the day nobody else has done it and that is the whole point, you cannot just wave it away because it annoys you and honestly the bitterness is getting ridiculous

I think people are underrating how hard it is to stay involved that often in a short tournament, even if some of the games got a bit loose. Seven assists is not nothing and it says a lot about how much of France's attack runs through him imo

I know people are clowning on France for this but if you actually watched them it was not some empty stat farming exercise, they were creating chances and Olise was the one putting them on a plate, and yes maybe the matches looked a bit weird at times but that is not his fault or the fault of the lads trying to win it, everyone acts like a tournament only counts if every goal is dramatic and every assist is some last minute rescue job which is nonsense, you still have to execute the pass and the movement and the timing and he has done that over and over again so the mockery feels way over the top to me and honestly it is just disrespectful to the side that has been better than people want to admit

people are acting like this is nothing but 7 assists in a world cup is mad no matter how you slice it and if france are getting that much output from one player then the rest of the teams have got no excuse really, he might not have scored but hes been in everything and thats what counts imo

The officials have let this whole thing become a joke because once the game is gone they just let everything drift and then everyone starts talking about stat padding like it is somehow the players fault, if you are Olise you still have to deliver the pass and make the right decision and he has done that plenty of times, but the ref and the whole vibe of these matches has been all over the place and it just feeds the nonsense from people who want to dismiss the achievement instead of watching what is actually happening on the pitch

The sensible point is that records like this are usually a mix of individual quality and tournament context, so it is fair to praise Olise while also noting that some of the games have clearly been one way traffic. But honestly the bigger thing for me is how quickly any good performance gets turned into a meme now, because people would rather post about hydration breaks and dictator photos and whatever else than just say a player has had a hell of a run, football discourse is completely cooked
