Opta’s Mbappé defensive actions stat is absolutely wild

Opta have put out a stat that every player in their top 20 leagues averages more defensive actions per 90 than Mbappé, and honestly it feels like one of those numbers you read twice because you think you’ve misread it. It’s hilarious, brutal and somehow very on-brand for the whole Mbappé discourse all at once.

It also raises the obvious question of whether this is just a weird stat or if it actually says something real about how his teams are set up. Either way, the reactions have been priceless and the LigaPro mystery man is already taking on mythical status.

What do you make of it then, genuine concern, funny internet stat, or both?

The officials should be embarrassed honestly because when a player is being carried this hard by the numbers and still somehow the whole game state gets turned into a meme you know the refs and the people compiling these stats are both taking the piss, how does every player in the top 20 leagues somehow look more active than Mbappe unless the whole thing is being judged in the most nonsense way possible and then everyone acts shocked when people clown it like the linesman must have been counting vibes instead of actions because this is beyond ridiculous

i cant even tell if this is meant to be a joke or a real stat anymore because it sounds so cooked that it almost loops back round to being believable, mbappe really is a hilarious individual if this is true and the fact people are now hunting a mystery player from ligapro like its some kind of urban legend is sending me

The obvious tactical read here is that if one forward is averaging so few defensive actions it can force the rest of the side into awkward cover shifts and make the whole pressing structure look uneven, so the stat is funny but not meaningless, and then you look at the wider list and start wondering how many elite attackers are basically being protected by their systems while everyone else does the running

A measured point is that this kind of stat can be useful if you use it as a conversation starter rather than a verdict, because defensive actions per 90 alone will never tell the whole story. But at the same time the image of Mbappe sitting at the bottom of a chart while everyone else, including older strikers, outworks him is so funny that it has basically become a cultural event and now I am more interested in the mystery LigaPro player than I am in any actual tactical nuance and that probably says more about the internet than football and now I am thinking about how every club has one bloke in the squad who runs like his boots are on fire while another just glides around and somehow gets all the headlines and honestly this whole thing is taking the piss

This is one of those stats that starts as a laugh and then becomes a bit uncomfortable the longer you think about it. If you are a coach, you would definitely be asking questions about the work rate and the structure around him, because it cannot be normal for a player of that level to stand out this much for the wrong reason, and now I am genuinely wondering how many big games have been shaped by that lack of effort and it is doing my head in

It is funny on the surface, but it probably says more about role and team structure than pure laziness. Still, when the stat is this extreme, you can see why people are running with the joke tbh

The stat is funny, but it should be treated carefully. Defensive actions per 90 can reflect role, team shape, and game state as much as individual effort. Even so, the gap here is so striking that it is hard not to read it as a genuine concern about his defensive contribution.

the way people are acting like the one ligapro lad is some kind of final boss is killing me because now every fanbase wants their own lazy hero and somehow mbappe has become the benchmark for not pressing which is absolute scenes

im honestly just laughing because this is the kind of stat that gets reposted in group chats for years and every time you see it you remember that football can still produce something completely absurd and now i need to know who the guy from ligapro is because that is proper internet folklore

I was in the pub earlier and someone on the next table was already talking football stats and I swear if this one came up in there everybody would have lost it because it sounds like the sort of thing you make up after three pints to wind people up, but then you check it and it is somehow real and then you are sat there trying to explain why a superstar forward is being outworked by basically everyone in the top 20 leagues and the whole room is laughing at the same time and one lad is saying it proves he does not defend and another lad is saying stats are nonsense and then somebody else starts asking about the LigaPro mystery man like he is some local legend and honestly that is exactly the sort of football chat I live for
