Paraguay shithousery and a ref with no control

This is exactly why people get sick of these kinds of matches because you can have all the talent in the world on the pitch and it gets completely buried under nonsense, the spot tampering, the little scraps, the constant niggling, the ref standing there with zero authority like he is waiting for someone else to make a decision, and then everyone wonders why the game becomes toxic, honestly if you are letting all that go then you are inviting more of it and that is why this has turned into such a horrible watch

The basic point is that the referee needed to take control much earlier, because once the players sense there are no consequences they start testing every boundary. But beyond that, the whole thing has become a weird moral theatre where neutrals are suddenly desperate for France to win just because the other side have made themselves impossible to back, and that says a lot about how quickly a match can flip from tense to unbearable

How can you let a match get this far out of hand and still stand there pretending everything is fine, because that is what the officials are doing here, they are allowing every little push, every little shove, every bit of crowding around the ball, and now even messing with the penalty spot, and then when it boils over they act surprised, it is pathetic, absolutely no authority at all, and if you cannot control the basics of a game like this then what are you even there for

People are acting like Paraguay are some sort of cartoon villains but this is still a competitive match and they are clearly trying to get under France’s skin because that is what weaker sides often do when the gap in quality is obvious, it is ugly and yes the spot thing is stupid, but the idea that they are the only reason this is messy ignores how badly the officials have handled it and how quickly any side would be tempted to push the limits if they knew they could get away with it

The match has become less about tactics and more about discipline. Once the referee stops managing the temperature, these scenes are almost inevitable.

There is a tactical explanation for why this kind of game becomes so nasty: when one side cannot match the other in open play, they start narrowing the margins through disruption, stoppages and confrontation, and if the referee refuses to clamp down then the match becomes entirely about emotion. That is what has happened here and it is why the whole thing feels so ugly, because nobody is protecting the football, and now every touch feels like it could become a scrap, it is infuriating and honestly the officials should be ashamed of themselves

im not even a france fan and i still ended up raging at this because it just got so grim so quickly, one minute youre thinking maybe this will be a decent contest and then it turns into all this petty stuff and everyone looks wound up and i just wanted the whistle to go and it to end
