Penalty vs penalty at the Met

they really are handing out these pens like sweets now, if that is the standard then every block in the box is going to be checked and everyone is going to hate it

Was in the pub watching it when the replay came up and everyone just started arguing over whether it came off the knee or the hand and the bloke next to me was absolutely certain it was never a pen while another lad was saying if thats given yesterday then its given today and by the end of it nobody was even talking about the match anymore just the rule and the ref and whether common sense has gone missing in football completely

The main point is that the officials have boxed themselves in by trying to be consistent with these handball calls, because once you give one like that you are almost forced into giving the next one even if it feels wrong. That is the real issue with modern refereeing, the fear of being accused of inconsistency has made common sense disappear and now every tie turns into a rules seminar instead of a football match, and i hate it

The officials seem to be following the same interpretation as before, but it is still a very debatable call.

Arsenal probably need to stop dropping so deep because once you invite that many bodies around the box these random handball calls start becoming a factor and then the whole game turns into chaos, Atletico will love it because they can slow everything down and make it ugly and that is exactly how they want this tie to go

I get why people are angry but if the same standard was used yesterday then the complaint is really about the rule itself, not just this one incident imo

The issue is less the individual incident and more the fact that the rule encourages these tiny, accidental moments to become decisive. When that happens in a big European tie, it will always feel wrong even if it is technically consistent.

people saying thats clearly never a pen are acting like the officials just made it up on the spot when the whole point is theyve been giving this kind of thing already so the anger should be at the rule not just this one decision

People are acting like Atletico have been handed some gift from the football gods but the truth is they are just taking advantage of a rule that everyone knows is broken and Arsenal are not exactly innocent here because if you sit back and let the game get messy then these moments can happen, but even so i still think the defenders get shafted far too often in situations like this because there is no real intent there and no real advantage gained from it and yet the whole crowd turns into judges and suddenly one tiny deflection is treated like a crime and i will defend teams getting caught up in this nonsense all day because the system is the problem not the players
