Pep and the madness of elite managers

pep really be talking like a poet after a loss and everyone in the room probably just sat there trying not to laugh or cry because you know hes got that aura where anything he says sounds deep even when its completely deranged

It is funny, but I can see why it would work for certain groups. Some players need logic, some need emotion, and Pep clearly leans into emotion when he thinks the moment calls for it. Still, it is one of those quotes that sounds more dramatic every time you read it

I know people love to turn this into a joke but honestly if you are trying to defend Pep with the usual he is a genius line then remember that he is also dealing with human beings and human beings do not always respond to cold analysis, sometimes they need to be shocked or spoken to in a way that cuts through the routine and maybe this was his way of doing that after a bad result, and Juventus are not some random side either so maybe the whole environment was tense and the group needed something different, people act like any emotional speech is automatically cringe but football is full of emotional idiots and the lads out there are not robots so a mad quote can still have a point and I will defend the weirdness because that is part of what makes football brilliant

Pep has always used emotion as a coaching tool, and this quote fits that pattern perfectly. The idea is not literal meaning, it is about reminding the players that the relationship with the game has gone stale and needs fixing. It is strange, but it is also very on-brand for him

i dont even think this is about pep being some genius mystic or whatever people are making it out to be, its just him being dramatic because thats his personality and the players probably already know the message anyway so the speech is more for the vibe than the content and thats fine but lets not pretend its some mystical masterclass

Years ago I had a manager at a pub who used to do this sort of thing after a bad shift he would gather everyone round and start talking like we were going into battle and one time he compared the kitchen to a broken marriage and honestly the whole room was trying not to laugh while he was dead serious so this Pep quote has me right back there because some blokes just cannot speak plainly even when the situation clearly calls for it and the weird part is everyone still remembers those speeches more than the actual job because they are so bizarre you tell the story for years and I reckon that is exactly what Pep does to his players, he makes the moment unforgettable whether it is helpful or not and that is a skill in itself even if it is a bit mental
