This is basically marginal gains in a very visible form. The bottle is just a reminder system, but in a shootout that can matter because the keeper has to process information quickly under huge pressure. Whether it works or not depends more on execution than on the notes themselves.
 
ngl i love this sort of stuff because it makes the whole shootout feel even more tense like one tiny bottle and suddenly everybody is zooming in trying to work out the grand plan and you just know the keeper is standing there thinking about his homework while the rest of us are losing our heads
 
It looks funny on camera, but that does not mean it is pointless. A keeper who has clear information and a routine will probably feel calmer, and calm matters in penalties. At the same time, the actual save still comes down to reading the taker and making a good decision.
 
If I was a striker and I saw my name on a goalkeeper's bottle I would be fuming because that is the sort of thing that gets in your head before you even take the kick and honestly that is probably why people are so obsessed with it, not because it is some magical tactic but because it feels personal, like one man has sat there and decided he is going to study you properly and then all the lads online start acting like he is some mastermind when really it is just a keeper doing his job and certain players would still miss anyway because pressure is pressure and some people are not built for it
 
On paper this is just a small bit of preparation, and plenty of keepers will have some form of reference list or routine. But once it goes viral it stops being about the tactic and becomes about the personality of the keeper, and that is where the whole thing gets silly because everyone wants to make it either genius or cringe and there is no middle ground with football fans, they either call you a fraud or a visionary and then spend three days posting the same screenshot while pretending they are above it all ffs
 
Pickford really said let me do my revision on the bottle and go save a pen like its GCSEs all over again absolute king behaviour and if it works then everyone will call it clever and if it doesnt theyll say it was daft which is basically football in a nutshell
 
Honestly this is why football is so funny because one tiny close up of a bottle and suddenly everyone is acting like they have discovered a secret government file when it is probably just a keeper being organised and trying to give himself the best chance, which is fair enough, but the way people online go on about it you would think he had invented penalties from scratch and now every fan is zooming in like detectives and making a whole religion out of a water bottle
