good bounce back yesterday. we keep the same energy and stay with the numbers. arsenal and como finished 1-1 at the emirates, lewis-skelly on 33 and baturina levelling for como on 43, so the goals angle landed before the break and the shootout after was just noise. clean step on the ladder.

benfica won the first leg 6-1 at the luz, so this tie is already dead as a contest and that is exactly why the goals angle is live tonight. hearts cannot sit deep and manage a five goal deficit, they have to throw bodies forward from the first whistle, and wouter vrancken is not going to park it in front of his own crowd on a european night. once a team abandons the block at tynecastle this game turns end to end very fast.

the numbers back it up on both sides. hearts have gone over 3.5 in four of their last six, benfica in seven of their last eight, and the last two matches for each of them cleared it as well. hearts also put four past dundee united on sunday with renaud, miller, braga and mcpake all scoring, so the attack is working fine even if the back four is not.

benfica are not exactly locking things down either. they have scored at least twice in each of their last four but they were held by academico viseu in their liga opener, which tells you the defensive side of this team is still loose in august. rotation does not hurt the angle much because even a second string benfica front line has a level advantage over a hearts defence that shipped six last week, and they will keep taking the space hearts leave behind them.

the shape of this one is simple. hearts need early goals to make the crowd believe, benfica counter into acres, and every goal either way just opens it up more. the first leg produced seven goals between these two and nothing about the setup tonight suggests a quiet ninety minutes. at 2.20 this is the aggressive step for the ladder and the numbers make sense.

sporting drew the opener 2-2 with estrela amadora, which was not the start alvalade wanted, but guimaraes come into this off a 0-1 home defeat to arouca and sit 16th with zero points after round one. that gap in confidence matters more than the draw on paper.

the head to head is one sided at alvalade. sporting have won 18 of the last 23 home meetings with guimaraes, drawn 3 and lost just 2, with a goal difference of 50-13 across that stretch. the most recent one in may finished 5-1 to sporting. guimaraes have not found a way to slow this fixture down in years.

with rayo unsettled and sevilla motivated to start the ure era with a home win, 2.15 on the hosts is a nice value spot for this step. one team can do most of the work here, and sevilla have every reason to make a fast start count.
