Rice reaction as West Ham go down

Declan Rice reacting to West Ham being relegated has kicked off the usual debate about loyalty, optics and who really still cares about who. Some people see a genuinely emotional ex-player who still has love for the club, others think it was all a bit too polished for the cameras.

Either way, it’s a rough day for West Ham and a weird one for Rice as well. He clearly means a lot to a lot of Hammers fans, even if some of them still boo him, and the whole thing has got people arguing about whether he should be praised or mocked for how he handled it.

Feels like one of those moments where football Twitter and football fans in the ground are speaking completely different languages. What do you make of it?
 
Booing him after that is mad honestly the bloke carried them for years and people still act like he personally relegated the club because he left for Arsenal absolute clown behaviour
 
some of you lot are obsessed with calling it performative when a player shows any emotion at all like what do you want him to do stand there smiling while his old club go down
 
From a football point of view, it makes sense why people are split on this. He left, he is at Arsenal now, and some fans will never be warm about that no matter what he says or how he reacts. But if you actually watched him at West Ham, it is hard to deny that he gave them everything and still seems emotionally tied to the club. The issue is people want clean villains and clean heroes, and football is never that neat. Then the comments start turning into weird little culture wars over a bloke reacting to bad news and everyone acts like they know his soul, it is exhausting honestly
 
I think the bigger point is that people project far too much onto these moments. He has every reason to still feel something for West Ham, and he has every reason to keep it measured because he now plays for Arsenal and anything else would be turned into a circus. That does not automatically make it fake. It just means he is aware of the cameras and aware of the reaction. But of course the internet sees one clip and suddenly everyone is a body language expert, everyone is a mind reader, and everyone is absolutely certain they know whether he is grieving or acting or whatever else. It is honestly ridiculous how quickly people turn on a player for not performing emotion in exactly the way they want, like he owes them a theatre production and not a reaction
 
people acting like he owes west ham his entire life after all he done for them is proper embarrassing tbh he stayed longer than most would have, he captained them, he won them a trophy, he gave them elite years and now because he is at arsenal he has to be treated like some traitor forever no wonder players stop caring once they leave because fans just turn nasty the second you put on a different shirt and then they wonder why he does not go overboard for them anymore
 
West Ham fans booing him while also acting shocked that he might still have feelings for the club is peak football logic really, like the man cannot win, if he smiles its fake if he looks sad its performative if he says nothing he doesnt care, absolute circus from start to finish
 
You can understand both sides here. Rice gave West Ham years of top-level service and clearly left a real mark, but supporters are also allowed to feel raw about him moving on. The reaction says as much about modern football fandom as it does about him.
