Rings for the World Cup winners

FIFA giving the Spain vs Argentina World Cup final winners championship rings is one of those ideas that will split people straight down the middle. On one hand it is a bit daft and very American, on the other hand it is just a bit of memorabilia and does not actually change the football at all.

It feels like the sort of thing people will moan about for weeks even though it has zero impact on the game itself. If the players want a ring to go with the medal, fair enough, but you can already hear the complaints about the World Cup getting more and more Americanised.

Personally I can see why some fans think it is cool and some think it is unnecessary. The real question is whether this is harmless fun or just another step in turning the tournament into a strange hybrid of football and US sports pageantry
 
Went to the pub with a lad years ago after a local cup final and he was showing everyone his cheap little ring like it was the crown jewels, had it on the bar, on the fruit machine, even tried to use it to pay for a round and got told to piss off, so this World Cup ring thing just makes me think the winners will either love it or lose it in a drawer with old receipts and keys and never look at it again
 
If it is just a keepsake then fair enough but the bigger issue is the whole vibe around it, once you start adding little bits from other sports it can feel like the tournament is slowly being dressed up for a different audience, and that is where people start getting twitchy
 
I am already sick of hearing about championship rings and the tournament has not even happened yet, because you just know some player will be making a massive deal out of it while another one acts like it is the greatest honour in history and it will all be overblown bollocks, and honestly if you are giving one to the winners then fine, but do not pretend it suddenly makes football better, because it does not, it just gives the broadcasters another thing to shove in your face while they talk about legacy and moments and all that crap, and if one player starts flashing his ring around like he invented the game then I am going to lose my mind
 
The officials will probably make this even more unbearable because you just know there will be some whole ceremony around the thing, some awkward handover, some long pause, and then people will act like it is all part of the spectacle when really it is just more pointless pageantry, and the same people who never shut up about tradition will suddenly be fine with it because FIFA says so, which is exactly the sort of nonsense that makes fans lose patience with the whole lot of them
 
At first glance, I actually think this is one of the less offensive ideas FIFA have had, because it does not interfere with the football itself and it gives the winners something tangible to keep, which is more than can be said for a lot of the weird branding nonsense around the tournament, but the problem is that it never stays as a one-off, does it, it starts with rings and then suddenly there is a half time show, then some sponsor driven ceremony, then a whole load of extra pageantry and everyone is supposed to clap like it is progress, and that is where it gets irritating because you can already see the slippery slope and the way people in charge will use this as proof that they are making the game bigger when really they are just making it noisier and more annoying and I swear if they start dangling rings in front of the players like it is some boxing weigh in then it is going to be unbearable
 
I can see both sides here. As a souvenir for the winners, the rings make sense and probably mean a lot to the players. The concern is less about the rings themselves and more about what they symbolise if FIFA keeps borrowing from American sports culture.
 
honestly if they want to give them a ring then whatever its not like it changes the result or the trophy and people are acting like its the end of football, bit dramatic really
 
people acting like a ring is some kind of final assault on football are hilarious mate it is a bit of shiny metal not the collapse of civilisation
 
This whole thing is exactly the sort of nonsense that gets people wound up for absolutely no reason because at the end of the day a ring is just a ring and if the players want one then fine but the way FIFA do anything makes it look like they are trying to turn every single moment into a marketing exercise and that is what people actually hate, not the object itself, the object is harmless, it is the endless corporate circus around it that does your head in, and you can already imagine the graphics, the speeches, the sponsors, the weird little promo videos and all the rest of it and it just becomes another layer of crap on top of a tournament that should be about football not about showing off some imported gimmick
