Cristian Romero being in Argentina on Sunday rather than at Tottenham’s match against Everton has kicked off a proper storm. When your club captain is absent for a game with that much on the line, you can understand why people are furious.

It’s one of those situations where the optics are awful even if there’s some explanation behind it. Spurs fans are already angry, neutrals are piling in, and it’s turned into a huge question about leadership, commitment and whether he actually wants to be there at all.

What do people make of it? Is this just the final proof he’s off, or are some fans overreacting to a bad look?
 
People are acting like this is some tiny thing but if you are the club captain and the club are in a relegation fight then you do not go off doing your own thing and leave everyone else to deal with the mess, that is exactly the sort of attitude that drags a dressing room down and makes fans lose faith, and honestly Spurs have backed him through all sorts and this is how he repays them, absolutely outrageous
 
I can see why Spurs fans are furious because the timing is terrible and the optics are even worse for a captain. Even if he wants out, you still expect basic professionalism and some respect for the shirt and the people who are left trying to hold the place together. But the more you look at it, the more it feels like he has mentally checked out already and that is the real problem, not just one trip to Argentina, because once a captain stops acting like one then the whole thing starts to rot from the top and it turns into a joke and everyone knows it and it is just embarrassing now
 
On one level this is a simple leadership issue: if you are captain and the club are facing a huge match, being elsewhere looks dreadful. On another level it says a lot about how modern clubs let situations drift until a player can basically opt out of the most important moment. Then you end up with the whole captaincy meaning nothing, and before you know it everyone is talking about River Plate and Belgrano and Spurs are just the side plot in their own crisis, which is mad really because the club should have shut this down immediately
 
Had a lad in the pub last night saying exactly this sort of thing happens when players know they are on the way out and I was telling him nah not like this surely, not the captain, but then you hear the story and you just shake your head because it is the sort of thing that makes everyone around you lose the plot, reminds me of when I watched a local side completely fall apart after their skipper stopped turning up for the big ones and the rest of the lads just looked lost, proper grim feeling and you could tell the whole place had gone rotten from the top and once that starts there is no fixing it quickly
 
It is a terrible look for a captain, especially with so much at stake. Spurs will struggle to spin this as anything other than a sign he is already halfway out the door.
 
The biggest issue is not just that Romero is in Argentina, it is that the club apparently allowed it to happen when the situation was so sensitive. If a captain can miss a decisive match and the hierarchy still lets it slide, that suggests a real breakdown in standards. Fans will read it as a sign he is gone already, and honestly it is hard to argue with them.
 
What gets me is the whole thing about the club allowing it in the first place because that is the bit everyone keeps dancing around, if you are Tottenham and you know this match matters then you do not let your captain swan off and do whatever he wants, that is on the people above him as much as him, maybe more, because they are the ones meant to set the standards and instead they have just rolled over and let it happen, absolutely useless from top to bottom and then everyone acts shocked when the fans are raging, well no shit, this is exactly how you create a circus and then the officials and the hierarchy get to hide behind vague statements while the club burns
 
Spurs captain doing a disappearing act before the big one is honestly so on brand at this point, you could not script a worse bit of timing if you tried and the fanbase is going to be losing its mind for weeks over it
 
I keep seeing people say it is just one trip and it is not that deep but if you are the captain and the club are staring at a match that could define the whole mood around the place then you simply do not make yourself unavailable for something else, end of, and the fact that this is even a conversation shows how far standards have dropped at Spurs because the captain should be the first one in, last one out, all that stuff people roll their eyes at until it matters and then suddenly it really matters, and now you have fans feeling like mugs because they backed him and defended him and he is off in Argentina watching River Plate instead of being there for Everton and that is exactly the sort of thing that makes a dressing room look soft and a club look weak
 
I would be absolutely fuming if I supported Spurs because this is the sort of thing that sticks with you far longer than one match, you just end up feeling like the whole thing has no structure and no one is really in charge, and it is hard not to take it personally as a fan
