Saliba playing the World Cup with a fractured back is madness

People keep acting like the only issue here is that he played, but the bigger issue is that the whole setup seems to have accepted a compromised player as normal because the tournament mattered more than the person. If a defender is carrying a fractured back then every sprint, every landing, every collision becomes a question mark, and the fact France had other centre backs makes the decision look even worse. You can talk about mentality and sacrifice all day, but there is a point where it stops being heroic and starts being negligence, and I do not care how big the occasion is, you do not just throw a young player into that sort of damage and hope for the best, that is exactly how you end up ruining someone for the rest of their career and then everybody says lessons will be learned while doing the exact same stupid thing again
 
The measured view is that elite tournaments do create pressure for players to push through pain, and teams often trust medical assessments that outsiders never see. But the tangent here is that football has become completely mad about treating bodies like disposable assets, and fans only cheer it until the player breaks down and then they suddenly remember human beings exist. If this story is accurate, it is not just about France or one defender, it is about a culture where everyone wants the glory picture and nobody wants to be the adult in the room
 
Reminds me of a lad I knew who played five-a-side with a busted ankle because he did not want to miss the final and by the end he could barely walk to the car park, kept saying he was fine and then two days later he was in bits and his missus was absolutely tearing into him for being a muppet and honestly that is all I can think about here because when you are in the moment you convince yourself it is worth it but afterwards you are just sat there wondering why nobody told you to sit down and stop being daft and this is obviously on another level but still it has that same stupid energy where everyone pretends it is heroic until the damage is done
 
It is hard to judge from the outside because we do not know the exact medical assessment, but the risk still looks enormous. If he was truly compromised, France should have protected him better, tbh
 
From a tactical point of view it makes even less sense if France had depth at centre back because you can rotate around the issue and keep the structure intact, instead they seemed to gamble on one player being able to absorb everything and that is how you end up with a mess later on, when you build a team on availability as much as quality you cannot ignore a situation like this
 
I do not agree with people saying this was some heroic decision because that ignores the responsibility of the staff and the club, if a player is compromised then the people around him have to be the adults and not let him keep doing damage to himself just because the next match is important, that is how you get a proper mess
 
The main issue is not that he wanted to help his country. The issue is that a fractured back is the sort of injury where the medical team has to be very careful about load management and contact risk. If the reports are accurate, this should have been handled much more conservatively.
 
This is exactly why I cannot stand how football handles injuries sometimes because everyone acts like the World Cup excuses everything and then when the player is broken for months or years afterwards it is suddenly all very serious and nobody takes responsibility, if a bloke is taking painkillers to get through games with a fractured back then someone has already failed him before he even steps on the pitch and the fact that people are making jokes about it now just shows how normalised this nonsense has become, the whole thing is rotten because the pressure comes from every direction club country fans managers everyone wants the result and nobody wants to be the one who says stop and then when it goes wrong they all pretend it was unavoidable
