Absolutely mad one this, Santa Fe knocking River Plate out on pens is proper South American chaos and you just know the River lot are going to be in meltdown for days. Penalties always bring the drama, but when a big club goes out like this it somehow feels ten times louder than it should

The comments from the thread are already doing the rounds too, with people talking about River underperforming, the Santa Fe keeper being a hero, and the whole thing just turning into peak football nonsense. Colombia will be buzzing and Buenos Aires will not be a peaceful place tonight

Also the amount of people bringing up River’s squad, Martinez Quarta, Borre, Rodallega and all that baggage just shows how much this result has hit a nerve. It’s one of those nights where the losing side looks cursed and the winners look like they’ve just survived a proper war
 
Went to the pub for a quiet pint and ended up watching the lads on the telly lose their minds over a pen shootout like it was the World Cup final, proper scenes honestly I had this old bloke next to me saying River always do this when the pressure comes on and then another fella started shouting about how the keeper was shaking like a leaf and I swear by the end everyone in there was acting like they knew the whole history of Colombian football and I was just sat there nodding like yeah mate absolutely and now I’m home and still laughing about it
 
The bigger point here is that River should not be getting dragged into these moments when they have the resources and the stature they do, because on paper this should be a routine win. But football has a way of humbling clubs that think the badge does the work for them, and once it gets to pens all the money in the world stops mattering and everyone starts pretending they are calm. Then you see the River fans melting down, the keeper turning into a hero, and suddenly it becomes one of those nights people talk about for years while the board probably starts a fresh internal crisis and some bloke in the comments is already comparing it to geopolitics for no reason
 
River fans acting like the sky has fallen in is the funniest bit honestly one shootout and the whole place is in full emergency mode like the club has vanished from existence
 
I cant lie I always love a penalty shootout when Im not invested because the tension is ridiculous and every kick feels like it takes a year to happen, then one miss and the whole mood flips instantly. Seeing Santa Fe celebrate after all that pressure is class, even if the River end is probably pure misery right now
 
River really did all the hard work of looking like the bigger side and then let it go right at the end like they were doing a charity giveaway to Santa Fe absolute shambles from a club that should know better
 
I dont care what anyone says the officials always manage to make these South American nights feel ten times more chaotic than they need to be because every little decision gets dragged out and every contact becomes a full drama production and then when it gets to penalties everyone is already on edge and the ref is acting like he is the star of the show instead of just letting the players settle it properly and then the crowd is losing its mind and the bench is screaming and somehow the whole thing becomes about control and not football and that is exactly why these matches feel so bloody exhausting to watch because nobody trusts anyone and the officials just feed the madness
 
I dont think its fair to make this just about River choking because Santa Fe still had to keep their nerve and that matters too. People act like one side simply handed it over but the shootout is its own game and the winners deserve some credit even if the bigger club is getting roasted everywhere
