Serie A on the BBC for free

The broader point here is that accessibility matters more than people think. If a league is easy to find, people are far more likely to build a habit around it, and that is how new fans get made. But knowing football media, this will probably turn into endless debate about whether the chosen match is glamorous enough, whether the host is the right one, whether the intro music is iconic enough, and suddenly everyone is fighting over presentation rather than just enjoying a free game of football

and can we talk about whoever is actually picking the games because if they keep serving up weird choices every week then whats the point of all this anyway like if youre trying to grow serie a in the uk you dont start with some random fixture no one asked for you put on the games people will actually watch and you make it easy for them and if the coverage is rubbish then its just another half baked broadcaster job where some suit thinks a free badge on the screen is enough and honestly i am already braced for one player to get talked up for 90 minutes when he has done nothing all game and it will be unbearable

It is a good step for Serie A, but the impact will depend on how seriously the BBC treats it. One live game a week is not huge, but it is enough to create a habit if the packaging is strong.

If they are going to show these games then the officials better not make it a total farce every week because nothing kills free football faster than a ref turning into the main character and ruining the rhythm of the match with every tiny decision like they are trying to prove a point to everyone in the stadium and at home and then the VAR nonsense starts and suddenly you are sitting there for five minutes waiting for someone in a room to decide what everyone already saw and by the time play resumes the whole thing has gone flat and the broadcaster is left trying to sell this as premium entertainment while the actual football has been killed by a bloke with a whistle and a headset and it is just exhausting

This reminds me of when I used to go round the pub on a Saturday and there was always one old bloke in the corner talking about Italian football like it was the only real football left and everyone else pretending they knew what he meant while half watching the telly and half arguing over pints and honestly that sort of thing is why free coverage matters because people do actually sit and watch if it is on in front of them and I can already see the same thing happening again with lads who have never watched a minute of Serie A suddenly acting like they have supported Bologna since birth and fair play to them really because football on TV should be a bit communal instead of everything being hidden behind a login and a monthly fee

nah i dont buy the whole this will be huge thing at all if they only show one game a week most people will forget it exists by next month and then everyone will be back moaning about subscriptions again

It is a smart bit of business from the BBC because there is clearly an audience for live football that does not want another subscription. The only issue is whether they can make Serie A feel like must-watch viewing rather than just a convenient filler slot, imo

Honestly this could be massive if they dont treat it like some throwaway bit of content because people forget how much free football changes things and if the BBC put a proper effort into the build up the analysis the presentation all of it then you might actually get fans sticking around but if they mess about and pick random games and shove it on at a weird time then it will just die on its arse and everyone will say see told you so and move on and that is exactly the sort of thing that drives me mad with football media now everything has to be branded and monetised and squeezed and if somebody is finally giving us free Serie A then just do it properly for once ffs

People are acting like this is some kind of charity gift but honestly it is a big deal for a league that has been ignored in this country for years and if anything it gives proper football fans a chance to see something different instead of the same old Premier League saturation every week. A lot of the comments are just sneering about old nostalgia and theme tunes but that misses the point completely because there are actual clubs and actual supporters here who will benefit from more exposure and more people talking about the league. It does not matter if it is only one match a week, that is still one match more than before for plenty of viewers and that is worth something, so all the people calling it tinpot can honestly do one

I genuinely love this because I have been saying for ages that more people would watch Serie A if it was just easy to find and not hidden behind a load of nonsense, and now there is at least a chance for that. I know some people are already moaning that it is not enough or that it will never be like the old days but that is missing the point a bit, because you have to start somewhere and free access is a huge first step. If the BBC do the coverage with a bit of personality then brilliant, if not then it still beats nothing, and I would rather have one actual match than another season of everyone talking about a league they never see
