Spain go to a World Cup with no Real Madrid players

It is a big headline, but I would be careful about overreading it. Spain are clearly selecting a wider pool now, and Madrid’s current Spanish options do not seem to be forcing the issue. That can happen without it being some dramatic decline in either the club or the national team.

On paper this is just a squad selection story, but in reality it feels like another sign that the old club-country pipeline is totally different now. Madrid used to be the obvious backbone of Spain in a lot of eras, so seeing a World Cup squad without one of their players is bizarre. But then you look at how they recruit, who they rely on, and how little room there is for a homegrown Spanish player to become indispensable, and it all makes sense. Still, the image of Spain walking into a World Cup with no Madrid representation is going to annoy a lot of people who think the badge should guarantee everything and honestly good, maybe it should annoy them, because the game has moved on and they have not

I do not care what anyone says, Spain are not suddenly better off because there is no Madrid player in the squad, that is such a lazy way to frame it and it ignores the fact that a club can still produce quality even if the current national team cycle does not suit them, and people are so desperate to dunk on Madrid that they will pretend every omission is some moral failure when really the best players get picked and that is it, no conspiracy, no collapse, no grand statement about heritage just the reality that the squad is what it is and Madrid are still Madrid whether the internet likes it or not and the whole thing is being turned into a cheap meme when it should just be treated as a weird selection quirk

What really gets me is the constant need to turn every squad announcement into some grand referendum on the officials or the federation or whatever else people want to moan about because if Madrid had one player in there nobody would be talking about conspiracy nonsense and now suddenly every angle gets dragged into it and people are acting like the whole thing was engineered by someone in a back room when the simplest answer is just that the players on offer were not good enough or not fit or not selected and that is all there is to it, but of course football discourse cannot just be normal for five minutes because some lad somewhere has to start screaming about bias and corruption and then everyone piles in and the thread turns into absolute mush

This is exactly the kind of stat that makes football discourse unbearable because everyone wants to turn it into a tribal fight when the obvious answer is right there in front of them, Madrid do not have the Spanish players people expected, Spain picked other options, end of story, but no, now you get the usual parade of people talking about identity, decline, anti this and anti that, and half of them have not even looked at the actual squad makeup, they just see the badge and start foaming at the mouth like it is some sort of personal insult to the club and the federation and the nation all at once
