Well, that was not exactly the start Spain would have wanted. Cabo Verde have somehow ended up with the first goalless draw of the World Cup and fair play to them, because that sounds like an absolutely massive result.

Spain will get the headlines for the wrong reasons, but there’s no point ignoring how organised Cabo Verde were. A lot of people will call it boring because it finished 0-0, but there’s clearly a proper story here and the reactions online are already chaotic.

Feels like one of those World Cup games that people will be talking about for the wrong and right reasons at the same time. Spain sloppy, Cabo Verde heroic, and everyone else suddenly very invested in a 0-0

Honestly I dont care what anyone says that Cabo Verde side deserved every bit of that point and then some, people will only talk about Spain missing chances and acting like it was some kind of failure from the favourites but the discipline, the shape, the calmness under pressure, that was massive and you could see every single player buying into it, they were organised, brave and properly up for it while Spain looked like they expected the game to just happen for them, that is not a fluke that is a team with a plan and massive belief and if anything it should be remembered as one of those nights where the underdog refuses to blink and makes the whole tournament feel alive

Spain had all the ball and still looked like they were playing into a wall, Cabo Verde kept the lines tight and never got dragged out of shape, thats the real story here not some fake outrage about the scoreline, if your press does not create chaos then a compact block can make you look miles off it

People always act like a 0-0 means nothing but this had everything didnt it, the nerves, the crowd, the feeling that Spain were just waiting for one clean moment that never came and Cabo Verde just kept saying no no no every time, and fair play because that takes serious concentration and guts and probably a bit of madness too, you could see the frustration building from Spain and then the whole thing just turned into one of those games where every block feels like a goal and every clearance feels like a celebration and by the end everyone watching was either losing their mind or pretending they werent invested but they absolutely were because the World Cup does that to you and honestly I will remember this one more than half the games that end 3-1 because it felt like a proper story not just a result

I was actually shouting at the telly by the end and I dont even support either side, Cabo Verde had me completely hooked and Spain just looked more and more rattled as it went on, mad game really

I dont buy the idea that Spain were totally useless, they had the pressure and the territory but Cabo Verde made every touch difficult and thats the bit people are skipping over

A draw like this is exactly why tournament football is so unpredictable, because on paper Spain should control most of the night and yet the game can still be dragged into a completely different rhythm by a side that is organised and fearless. Cabo Verde clearly understood the assignment and made it ugly in the best possible way, but then you start thinking about all the wider nonsense around modern football and how people only value matches if they are packed with goals, which is bollocks really because the tension here was the whole point and somehow it turned into a proper event, and now everyone is acting like they saw it coming when half of them were probably calling it a dead game at half time

Spain lacked sharpness in the final third and never really found a way to stretch Cabo Verde consistently. The defensive structure from Cabo Verde was excellent, though, and they made the match look far more difficult than a lot of people expected.

On a tactical level Spain just never created enough separation between the lines and Cabo Verde were happy to stay compact and deny central space, which is why the whole thing kept turning into frustration rather than clear chances. But after a while you stop thinking about structure and just start thinking about the sheer ridiculousness of it all, because how is this the first goalless draw of the tournament and how is everyone suddenly pretending they arent emotionally attached to a 0-0, madness honestly
