Spain vs Argentina could be a proper all-timer

Spain vs Argentina being the first World Cup final to feature the reigning Euro and Copa America champions is a ridiculous bit of football trivia. It already feels like one of those finals people will be talking about for years, even before a ball is kicked.

There’s something very neat about the two continental champions ending up on the biggest stage like this. At the same time, it also feels a bit mad that this is the one that finally lines up after Finalissima got binned for it.

Either way, it has absolute scenes written all over it. Big occasion, big names, and probably a lot of online nonsense before and after the match.

The officials will be under insane pressure in a final like this and you just know every little thing is going to be dragged out and checked and replayed and argued over for ages because it is Spain and Argentina and the whole world will be watching, one soft foul and one dodgy card and suddenly everyone is losing their head, the ref will be whistled at from minute one and the VAR lot will probably make it even worse because they always manage to turn a normal match into a complete circus and then act surprised when everyone is furious, honestly these big finals always end up being about the ref more than the football and it does my nut in

Went to the pub for a final once thinking it would be a quiet one and by half time the whole place was packed with lads arguing about whether the ref had ruined it already and one bloke kept insisting the match was fixed because the booking felt unfair and another fella was just sat there staring into his pint like his life had ended, by the end we were all standing on chairs shouting at the telly and someone had ordered chips for the entire table without asking, football does that to people and a Spain Argentina final would have the same effect in every pub in the country if it was on a Saturday night, absolute chaos from the first whistle to the last and probably a few strangers hugging at the end or kicking off over nothing

People will still find a way to say it is boring because there is no underdog fairy tale or whatever but they would be chatting pure rubbish, two champions meeting in a final is exactly what you want and it is miles better than another random mismatch where one side parks the bus and prays, this is elite

Tactically this could be really interesting because both sides would expect to have spells on the ball and neither would want to chase shadows for ninety minutes, so it becomes about who controls the middle and who handles transitions better, simple as that really

It is a ridiculous bit of football history and exactly the sort of thing people will pretend they expected all along if it happens, but the idea of the reigning Euro and Copa America champions meeting in the final does make the whole tournament feel bigger than usual tbh

Some people will still manage to turn this into a hate watch for one player or another and I already know which names will get dragged through the mud if anything goes wrong, one bad touch and suddenly a bloke with a keyboard is acting like he has spent twenty years in elite coaching, the discourse around these finals is always unbearable and there is always someone ready to pile on a player who has carried the team all tournament, it is beyond tiring and honestly if one of the big names has a quiet night the reaction online will be embarrassing and over the top and the same people will disappear when the praise is due because that is how football chat works now and it makes the whole thing feel a bit ruined

It is a fascinating matchup because both teams arrive with serious pedigree, so there is no easy narrative about one being the clear favourite. The final will likely come down to how well each side manages possession under pressure and whether either can create enough space in the final third.

It is a great headline for the tournament, even if the build-up will probably be unbearable by the time the match arrives. A final between the Euro and Copa America champions gives it an extra layer of credibility, and that is hard to argue with.
