Switzerland edge Colombia on pens

Switzerland are through after beating Colombia 4-3 in the penalty shootout, and honestly that sounds a lot more dramatic than the match probably felt for anyone with a pulse. The thread vibe is basically that both sides managed to turn a knockout game into a long, painful stare-off before the pens decided it.

Colombia will feel like they let it slip, especially with the talk in here about poor finishing and a keeper who was shaky from the spot. Switzerland, on the other hand, are getting praised for finding a way again and for finally coming out on the right side of a shootout. Quarter-finals next, and plenty of people already fancy them to make life awkward for Argentina.

Both teams really went out there and delivered one of those matches where everyone keeps saying it was tense and dramatic but in reality it was just a long miserable evening of missed chances, nerves, and people pretending they enjoyed it because it ended in pens, Switzerland probably take it because they were calmer and Colombia probably hate themselves because they had enough moments to settle it before that and just didnt and now everyone is talking about the shootout like it was some masterclass when it was mostly just a coin toss with a football in the middle of it

That feels like a proper knockout win for Switzerland, even if the football itself was a bit of a slog. Colombia will be kicking themselves because they seemed to have enough in the game to make it different, but the shootout pressure told in the end.

Switzerland deserve credit for being composed when it mattered, because these games are often decided by who handles the pressure better rather than who looks prettier for 90 minutes. Colombia will probably look back at the missed chances and wonder how they let it get that far.

I am absolutely done with this Colombia keeper at this point because every single time penalties came around it felt like he was making the whole thing harder than it needed to be and you could see the tension all over him before the first one even went in and then it just kept getting worse and worse and I know people will say the takers have to do their job too and fair enough they do but when your keeper is looking like that from the spot it drags the whole side down and you can almost feel the collapse coming before it happens and now everyone is acting shocked but this was there to see from miles away and it is just maddening

Switzerland were never going to be easy to break down in a game like this, and once it drifts to penalties the margins get tiny. Colombia had enough of the ball and enough moments to take control, but they never made it count, and that is exactly why people are now calling it deserved for Switzerland. Still, the way this ended is brutal because you can point to one save, one miss, one bad run-up, one moment of hesitation and the whole tie flips, and Colombia just look stuck in that awful space where they were not bad enough to be embarrassed and not clinical enough to survive and now they are out and everyone will remember the pens and not the rest and honestly that is making me furious because they should have had this sorted long before it got there

Colombia never really found enough tempo in the final third and that is what killed them, because Switzerland were happy to stay compact and let the game become a grind and once it reached penalties the momentum had already shifted and the pressure was always going to sit on the side that had not finished its chances
