Trent, Liverpool and the abuse fallout

Trent Alexander-Arnold speaking openly about the abuse after leaving Liverpool has kicked off the same old debate again. Nobody should be getting abused for a football move, but it is also clear why plenty of Liverpool fans feel the whole thing was handled badly.

A lot of the anger seems to be about how he left rather than the fact he left. For some fans, a boyhood player going to Real Madrid on a free was always going to sting, especially after the whole 'scouser in our team' thing.

There is probably a middle ground here that gets missed in the shouting. Criticism is fair, abuse is not, and both sides can be true at once.
 
I get why people are emotional about it because he was meant to be the local lad and all that but once a player decides his future is elsewhere then thats it really the club move on the fans move on and the abuse angle is just grim no matter how annoyed you are
 
The basic footballing point is simple enough, if a player wants out then the club and fanbase usually want clarity early, not months of noise and awkwardness, and when it is a boyhood player people take it even harder because the identity piece matters as much as the ability. But then you add the free transfer angle, the Real Madrid move, the whole image of being the scouser in our team and it becomes a perfect storm. Nobody is entitled to abuse him online, that is obvious, but equally nobody should pretend the reaction came from nowhere. The whole thing was always going to end badly once the trust went, and now everyone is acting shocked that it did. Football fans are exhausting honestly
 
The abuse is indefensible, but the backlash was always going to happen after a move like that. If you are a local lad and you leave in that way, people will take it personally and that was never going to be a smooth ride imo
 
From a football perspective I can understand both sides of it. Liverpool fans feel he had a special relationship with them, and when that kind of bond breaks it always feels harsher than a normal transfer. At the same time, people are talking as if he committed some unforgivable crime just by leaving, which is silly. The abuse stuff is embarrassing and no player should have to deal with that, but the reaction was never going to be warm after the way it played out, especially with the free move and the Madrid link hanging over it for so long and everyone pretending they were surprised when the boos started and the anger came out and honestly the whole thing has just dragged on far too long and turned into a complete mess
 
people keep acting like this is some mystery when it really isnt he left his boyhood club in a way that made fans feel played and then everyone is acting surprised that they reacted badly and im not talking about the abuse because obviously that is over the line and stupid but the actual football side of it was always going to get ugly once it looked like he was lining up a move and keeping everyone guessing for ages and then the whole thing with real madrid just made it worse because that club already gets under peoples skin and if you are a local lad then the standards are different whether people like it or not and i know some people want to make it all about contract law and professional rights but football is emotional and fans do not react like a boardroom and they never will and now we have this endless cycle of him saying he loves the club and the club saying thanks but fans feeling like mugs and honestly it is just boring now because everyone had their say months ago and we are still stuck here
