UEFA actually coming out looking decent here

Honestly the funniest bit is not even the statement itself it is the fact that UEFA can look like the voice of reason without having to do anything remotely difficult because FIFA keep handing them these golden chances and then everyone acts surprised when people clap for the bare minimum, and I know people love the banter and the tap in jokes and all that but this is exactly why fans dont trust the people running the sport anymore because one minute its rules and integrity and the next it is some random political phone call and a decision gets bent out of shape and then everyone is supposed to pretend this is normal, it is not normal and it should not be normal and if this keeps happening then football will just keep feeling like a rigged show and that is a proper disgrace
 
The refereeing and administration around these cases is a complete joke and it is impossible not to see the pattern now because when the decision suits the powerful people it gets reviewed, when it does not it gets buried, and then everyone is expected to swallow a statement and move on like fans are stupid, which is exactly why people lose faith in tournaments and why every close call feels poisoned before a ball is even kicked because the officials and the suits have made themselves the story again and again and again
 
its mad how they can make one statement and suddenly look like the only grown ups in the room when really theyve just not cocked it up as badly as fifa have and thats the standard now apparently
 
At a basic level, the statement is correct and the reasoning behind it is easy to understand, especially when you compare it to the way other cases have been handled. But the problem is bigger than one decision or one player, because every time FIFA or the wider authorities make a mess of it they force everyone else into damage control and then we all get stuck praising the least bad option, which is absurd, and honestly I am so sick of the whole lot of them acting like this is fine when it is clearly a giant pile of nonsense and they know it
 
The statement is sensible, but it is only significant because the surrounding context is so messy. If the same standard had been applied consistently, nobody would be talking about UEFA as if they had done something extraordinary.
 
It is a decent statement, but the real story is how low the expectations are. That says more about football governance than it does about UEFA.
 
UEFA are absolutely loving this because they get to sit there and act like they are above the chaos while FIFA keep stepping on rakes and handing them easy wins, and I get why people are praising the statement because it does sound like the sensible position, but the whole thing still stinks because the same people are only brave when the cameras are already rolling and the outrage is already built, and that is what annoys me most, not even the specific case but the endless game of optics where everyone is pretending to be shocked while the sport gets dragged through the mud again and again and people are left arguing about who looks least awful instead of who is actually right
 
The statement itself is not controversial, and in isolation it is hard to argue with. The issue is that football authorities only seem capable of clarity when they are responding to a mess someone else created, which turns every correct decision into a branding exercise. It would be nice if the competence arrived before the public embarrassment, but that would require a level of organisation that these people never seem to manage, and somehow we are all just meant to treat this as normal while the suits keep passing the blame around like a hot potato and then wondering why everyone is cynical
 
Proper comedy this because every time FIFA give themselves a black eye UEFA stroll in like the sensible cousin at the family meal and everyone claps, but if you think about it for two seconds it is still just the same circus with different clowns and somehow we are all supposed to be grateful that the clown in the blue shirt did not throw the pie this time, absolute madness really
