Uzbekistan robbed of a worldie

That was ridiculous from Uzbekistan at 90+10. For a split second it looked like one of those goals that gets replayed for years, the sort of hit that makes everyone in the stadium just stop and stare.

Colombia survive it, obviously, but the real story is how close that was to being the goal of the tournament. You do not often see a chance hit with that much power and confidence right at the death.

Shame it did not go in, because that would have been absolute scenes. Instead we are left with everyone saying the same thing: what a strike, and what a missed moment.

On a pure footballing level that is exactly the sort of chance you want your best striker to take, late in the game, no hesitation, just pure conviction and clean contact, and if that sneaks in it changes the whole mood of the match and probably the whole tournament narrative. But then it flies by the post and everyone is just left staring at the screen like what the hell just happened, because it deserved so much more and now it is just another clip and that is honestly infuriating

Not even kidding the officials would have had a nervous breakdown if that had gone in because somehow these moments always end up with some nonsense about added time or a foul or a push in the box or whatever and you just know they would have spent ten minutes looking for a reason to ruin it and the whole thing is a joke anyway because the game keeps stopping and starting and then you get a hit like that and all anyone can talk about is whether some bloke on the touchline blinked wrong

Nah I dont buy the whole robbed of the tournament goal thing because the shot being good does not magically mean it was destined to be historic, loads of hits look massive in real time and then people overhype them because they saw the net shake a bit or the keeper dive late, still a great effort obviously but lets not pretend every rocket that misses by a yard is some instant puskas winner

This has me thinking back to one night in the pub when we were all watching some random late game and the whole place had gone a bit flat because it was one of those dead nights where nobody can be bothered and then someone lashed one from miles out and for a second the whole room just froze and then everyone was shouting at once and that is exactly what this felt like to me because even if it does not go in you still get that little jolt in your chest and you end up telling the story for ages like you were actually there and every time you retell it the shot gets more ridiculous and the crowd gets louder and the moment gets bigger and that is football really just pure chaos and heartbreak and a load of lads acting like they are in a documentary

It was a brilliant effort, but I think the reaction is also about the timing as much as the strike itself. Late moments like that always feel bigger, especially when they come from nowhere and nearly change everything.

I am telling you now that is the sort of shot that makes you jump off the sofa and then immediately start swearing at the screen because you know in your bones it was almost something ridiculous and then it just keeps flying and you are like no no no please please and then it smacks the woodwork or flies wide and the whole room goes mental and everyone starts talking over each other and saying it would have been goal of the tournament and honestly they are right because some strikes just have that look about them and that one had it from the second it left the boot and now I am annoyed all over again just thinking about it

That is the sort of hit that makes the keeper look like he has seen a ghost and the whole bench start losing their heads because they know they have just been one inch away from absolute scenes and now everyone is pretending they stayed calm when really they were all shouting at the telly like madmen

It had everything except the finish, which is why everyone is losing their minds over it. The technique looked clean and the timing of it made it feel massive even though it did not go in, imo
