Villa confirm Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham United, and it feels like one of those moves that could either look very sensible or very Villa by the end of it. He is still such a weird player to judge because the raw defending is obvious, but the on-ball side has always split opinion.

There are already jokes flying around about Matty Cash getting some rest and Villa loving a double-barrel name, which is fair enough. Emery has a reputation for getting more out of limited players, so maybe this is exactly the sort of signing that makes sense for them.

What do people make of it then, good bit of business or just another familiar Premier League shuffle?
 
On a basic level it is a sensible move because Wan-Bissaka gives you a very clear defensive profile and Villa have clearly decided they want reliability in that area. The odd bit is that he still feels like one of those players who has been around forever without ever quite changing the conversation about him. Every time he moves clubs people act shocked and then six months later we are back to the same debate about whether he can pass, whether he can improve, whether Emery can unlock him, and then somehow the whole thing turns into a discussion about socks, kit changes and which commentator has the most dramatic nickname for a sliding tackle
 
The officials will probably still find a way to make this about them because every time Wan-Bissaka is involved the game becomes a tutorial on how to ignore the obvious and let the ref get away with absolute bollocks the whole thing just turns into stop start nonsense where one tackle is praised and the next is somehow a booking and then everyone acts shocked when the match gets ruined by some random whistle happy clown on the touchline and VAR sitting there doing fuck all while the crowd loses its mind and the players are left looking at each other like who actually makes the decisions in this sport
 
I think this fits Villa more than people will admit because Emery tends to want clean role players who can be coached into very specific behaviours and Wan-Bissaka is exactly that kind of fullback he can win duels all day and that lets the rest of the structure squeeze up higher but if he has to be the one starting attacks every week then you are probably asking for trouble
 
It is a pretty classic Emery signing in the sense that it prioritises a very specific defensive skill set over all-round flair. Wan-Bissaka should improve their one-v-one security and give them a different option when they want to protect a lead. The question is whether the rest of his game is enough for Villa to keep progressing.
 
People always talk about Wan-Bissaka like he is some kind of finished article or some kind of lost cause and both takes are lazy because the bloke has always been asked to be two different players at once and then gets judged for not being both at the same time he is obviously elite in duels and if you want an attacker to have a miserable night then he is your man but the endless moaning about his passing has become its own weird internet hobby like yes we know he is not Marcelo but the way some fans go on you would think he personally offended them by clearing a cross into row z every now and then and honestly if the manager is sensible he can be very useful without needing to reinvent him into some glamour fullback who ping balls about for fun
 
I think this is a smart signing for Villa. He gives them a very defined strength and if Emery can simplify his role then there is real value there. The funny thing is how quickly people forget the same player can look excellent in one setup and awkward in another, and that is probably the whole story here if we are being honest because the conversation always swings from hype to mockery and back again and the bloke just gets on with it and now everyone is acting like this is some huge revelation when really it is just another Premier League club deciding they want a defender who can lock down a flank and make life miserable for wingers and yeah that is fine but some of the takes are absolutely doing my head in
