Villa confirm Aaron Wan-Bissaka

I was in the pub when the news came through and the whole table just went straight to the same joke about Matty Cash getting a rest and everyone laughed like it was the first time they had ever heard it even though we have been making that exact joke about Wan-Bissaka for years and there was this one bloke who kept saying Emery will turn him into a monster and another lad saying he will be back to doing slide tackles for fun and I just sat there thinking football transfers have become a bit mad because the same names keep moving around and the same conversations keep happening and somehow it still feels fresh when your own club is the one involved

The best way to look at this is that Villa have bought a very clear defensive tool and not much else, which is fine if the rest of the squad is built to cover him and if Emery wants that kind of specialist option. But people keep talking as if that automatically means he will suddenly become some complete fullback and that is where the conversation gets silly because the flaws are still there and they will still be there unless something massive changes and honestly the obsession with turning every player into a different player is exhausting and half the time it just feels like people are waiting for him to fail so they can say told you so

Honestly I just think this is one of those signings that will annoy rival fans more than it should because they see the name and instantly remember the slide tackles and the chaos and then assume he is either world class or useless and neither is true he is just a very specific defender who makes sense in a very specific setup and if Villa are trying to tighten up then fair enough but the idea that every club has to play the same way or every fullback has to be some passing machine is just nonsense and people need to calm down about it a bit because not every signing has to be pretty to be useful

Cant lie this one has me weirdly hopeful because every time he is mentioned you remember the tackles and the recovery pace and all the stuff that actually matters when a winger is trying to take the piss and I know there are limitations but Villa have not signed him to run a midfield have they they have signed him to defend and that is exactly what he is good at so if Emery can keep it simple then this could look excellent

Everyone acting shocked like Villa have not been doing this sort of thing for ages is hilarious because they clearly see a profile they like and go for it and then the same lads who call him limited will be the first to moan when he pockets their winger and suddenly it is all about system and coaching and not about the player at all funny how that works

It feels like one of those transfers that makes a lot more sense if you trust the manager to build around the player rather than expecting the player to become something he is not. Wan-Bissaka has a clear ceiling, but he also has a very clear value, so I can see why Villa have gone for it imo
