Aston Villa are reportedly in talks with Chelsea over a club-record move for Nicolas Jackson, with the fee being discussed at £50m plus £15m in add-ons. It feels like one of those transfers that had been building for a while, especially with the Rogers deal already in the background.

Jackson is clearly a divisive one. Some see a hard-working striker with loads of movement and decent numbers, others see the misses and think he’s nowhere near that price. For Villa, it could be a statement signing, but it also feels like a massive bet on whether Emery can get the best out of him.

Chelsea, meanwhile, seem to be in another one of those situations where a player they are happy to move on somehow still attracts a huge fee. It’s the kind of deal that will have fans on both sides arguing for days.
 
If Villa are paying that much then they must think Emery can fix the finishing because Jackson’s movement is decent but the final ball and end product still looks all over the place and that is the whole gamble here really
 
From a tactical point of view, Jackson suits a side that wants pressure, runs in behind, and constant movement. The fee is steep, but if Villa are trying to replace output and intensity at once, I can see why they are looking at him.
 
The sensible point here is that Villa are not buying a finished article, they are buying a profile. Jackson gives you pace, runs, pressing and enough threat to stretch a defence, which is exactly why a manager like Emery would fancy him. But then you look at the price and you have to wonder how much of it is actual value and how much is just the market being completely cooked. Chelsea always seem to get to the front of the queue when it comes to turning a player they are bored of into a headline fee, and every other club just stands there with their hands in their pockets wondering how that happened. It is the same cycle every summer now, people laugh first, then the deal happens, then everyone says the market is broken, then the next club does exactly the same thing and we all act surprised again. If Villa get him and he starts missing sitters in front of the Holte End then this whole thing is going to become a proper soap opera and the internet will be unbearable for weeks
 
On paper, this is the sort of move that makes some sense for Villa if they want a younger striker with Premier League experience and a high work rate. The problem is the fee is so eye-watering that every miss is going to be replayed a thousand times and every bad touch will be treated like a crime. Chelsea are somehow getting away with selling players for serious money again and I honestly do not know whether to laugh or cry because it feels like they live in a different financial universe. And if Villa end up paying this much and still feeling like they need another forward after that, then what exactly was the point of all this? It is just constant transfer theatre, clubs talking themselves into deals, fans arguing over clips, and everyone pretending this is normal when it is absolutely not ffs
 
Honestly the officials and the whole transfer market are both taking the piss here because every time a club wants to do business the fee gets pushed higher and higher and then everyone acts like it is normal, and with Chelsea especially it is always the same nonsense where they somehow get a ridiculous return for a player that half the internet has decided is either a fraud or a hidden gem depending on the day, and the refs of the market if you want to call them that are letting these valuations fly with no consistency at all, one club pays peanuts for a kid then another club pays a fortune for a player with the exact same reputation and we are all just supposed to nod along like it makes sense, it is absolute bollocks really, proper nonsense, and if Villa get rinsed for this while Chelsea walk away smiling then someone somewhere is having a laugh and the rest of us are just watching the game get more stupid by the week
 
Villa fans are about to spend the next month arguing themselves into the ground over this because on one hand he can clearly do a job and on the other hand the price makes your eyes water and that is before you even get into the Chelsea angle where somehow every outgoing becomes a saga and every fee looks like a win for them
