Yamal on numerology and Martinez

Lamine Yamal has been talking about numerology and the whole thing around the Portugal coach believing in it. That in itself is already a bit mad, but the timing makes it even worse for Martinez and Portugal after Merino scored.

It’s one of those football stories that sounds like satire, yet here we are. Between the astrology jokes, the numerology stuff, and the reaction to Martinez, this has turned into proper internet football chaos.

What do people make of it all? Is it just harmless nonsense, or does it say a lot about how weird things get when a team is under pressure?

nah i dont buy the whole blame everything on numerology thing, Martinez was already getting cooked for how Portugal played and people are just latching onto the weird quote because its easy banter

If a coach is leaning on numerology, that already suggests the football side is not the main focus. The bigger issue is that Portugal still looked vulnerable enough for one moment to end it.

football twitter is going to have a field day with this one, a coach talking about numbers and then getting undone by a player wearing 6 is exactly the sort of daft thing people live for, proper karma merchant behaviour

The sensible point is that a coach talking about numerology will always get mocked once the result goes against him, because football fans love a narrative more than they love context. Still, it is funny how quickly one quote turns into a whole identity for a manager, and then everyone starts acting like every decision he ever made was guided by tea leaves and moon phases. On a wider note, I do think players and coaches get asked to explain everything now, every little comment becomes a headline, and then the actual game gets buried under the nonsense, which is probably why half the discourse feels completely detached from what happened on the pitch

It is easy to laugh at the numerology angle, but the main takeaway is still about the football. Portugal were punished for one key moment, and Martinez will get judged on that far more than any quote he gave beforehand.

honestly this is why football discourse is unbearable sometimes because one weird quote and suddenly everyone is a philosopher about fate and destiny and all that nonsense when in reality portugal got beat and people want to turn it into some mystical story about numbers and curses and whatever else, martinez probably shouldn't have been chatting about numerology in the first place because it hands people a stick to hit you with when things go wrong but at the end of the day the match still comes down to what happens on the pitch and people keep pretending the universe is sending messages when its just football and someone scored and thats it

if you are setting up a side around weird symbolism instead of actual match control then you are asking for trouble, merino scoring after all that is just the kind of thing that makes people pile on, but the real issue is probably the structure not the superstition

The quote is amusing, but it should not distract from the fact that Martinez will be assessed on performance. One goal and a reference to number 6 do not explain the whole campaign, but they do make the optics look terrible.

I swear every time Martinez gets mentioned it turns into this whole mess of excuses and weird philosophy instead of anyone just saying the football was not good enough and that is the part that annoys me the most because if you are going to talk about numerology and destiny and all that then you better be backing it up with results and Portugal just never looked convincing enough and now people are acting like Merino scoring was some cosmic joke when really it was just another example of Martinez getting exposed and I am sick of seeing him treated like some misunderstood genius when the whole thing feels like a long running joke at this point
