Two teams in a downward spiral collide
University of NSW FC and Sydney Olympic FC meet on Saturday, having to wait until the final day of the season for their chance of survival.
UNSW come into this game with three wins and two defeats in their last five and back-to-back defeats in their two most recent outings. They followed up a 3-1 win over Spirit FC at home with defeats away to APIA Leichhardt FC and Western Sydney Wanderers FC Youth. They sit 12th in the table with 31 points from 26 games, while Sydney Olympic are 16th with 19 points from 26.
Olympic will have to improve on a recent record of one win, one draw and three defeats, including three consecutive losses, to have any chance of clawing back. Their last three results have been a 4-0 defeat away to Manly United FC, a 0-3 loss at home to Brisbane Roar FC and a 1-3 defeat at home to Apia Leichhardt Tigers.
Olympic’s need makes this no walk in the park for UNSW
UNSW are rightful favourites here at 1.9 but the bookmakers are probably underestimating Olympic's motivation to win here at 3.4. The draw is overpriced too at 3.7 and a slim UNSW win is the most likely outcome, although Sydney's desperation makes this unlikely to be a walk in the park.
Olympic will have to play with a degree of urgency in this one and it could be a nervy affair. UNSW have been playing some good football in the main and Gabe Knowles' side are well organised, working the ball in numbers and controlling the midfield. They get plenty of corner kicks and free kicks in good positions, so they can be dangerous on set pieces too.
Labinot Haliti's men are less subtle, living off aerial duels, second balls and organised defending. The styles clash should produce a tense battle but with UNSW at home, they look the more likely to win. Olympic have conceded 30 goals away from home in the NPL New South Wales 2026 and they may struggle to keep UNSW at bay here.
Over 2.5 goals at 1.55 and Both Teams to Score at 1.48 are a bit rich for my blood, but I think there will be goals on the board and I'm happy to back UNSW to edge it. These sides met in the NPL New South Wales 2026 three months ago and Sydney Olympic came out 2-1 winners at home, so there will be a bit of a revenge angle to this one and the hosts should have just enough to edge it.
