Seagulls vs Toffees in Premier League 2 top-16 tussle
Brighton & Hove Albion U21 will be looking to improve their form when they face Everton U21 on Sunday in a Premier League 2 clash that has extra significance because of its impact on the top-16 battle and the differing philosophies of the two sides.
Shannon Ruth’s Seagulls have a possession-based, positional style that mirrors the first team’s tactical identity, playing a fluid 4-3-3 system that is all about patient build-up play, positional play and proactive pressing to dictate the tempo and flow of the game. Ruth’s team will look to Cameron Peupion for creativity and drive from midfield, Jack Hinshelwood to be the anchor of their build-up and Nehemiah Oriola to lead the frontline, using his movement to create space for others.
Everton’s Paul Tait tends to prefer a more direct game with pace on the wings and players who can punish teams when they have the ball in wide areas. Tait’s Toffees are similar to the Blues of the past in that they will look to overload the flanks and then get players to make direct runs in behind, especially when they can win the ball back in a good position. Francis Okoronkwo will have the pace to get forward, while Sean McAllister can provide the steel and distribution in the middle of the park.
Expect an end-to-end clash with a few goals
The Seagulls are the slight favourites at 57/50 with the Toffees at 93/50 and the draw at 29/10, but Everton have the better recent form and have a good record against their hosts. In their three most recent clashes in Premier League 2, Everton have won twice and lost once, winning 1-0 at home in this fixture last season.
Brighton have only won one of their last three at the Amex Elite Football Performance Centre, losing twice, so there is a slight edge to the visitors on the balance of the stats, but we’ll take the home team to win in an open game of two teams that can score and concede. Braiden Graham has three goals in his last five for Everton and looks to be their danger man, while Oriola has three in Brighton’s last 10.
With ‘Over 2.5 goals’ at 1/2 and ‘Both teams to score’ at 23/50 our fancy is that this could be a high-scoring affair as the Toffees tend to get caught out when they lose possession because they are set up to hit teams on the break.
