- Coventry City have won the last two Championship 2025-2026 meetings with Portsmouth, including a 2-1 win at Fratton Park five months ago.
- Coventry City have won 15 of their 21 Championship 2025-2026 home matches, averaging 2.05 goals per game in front of their home fans.
- Portsmouth have won just five and lost nine of their 21 Championship 2025-2026 away matches, scoring only 20 goals on the road.
Pompey’s promotion push is flattering to deception
With promotion and survival at stake, Coventry City should have enough attacking quality, as well as midfield control, to see off a pragmatic and resilient Pompey side on Tuesday.
Frank Lampard has made Coventry City hard to play against and equally hard to beat since taking over in November 2024, because of his tactical flexibility and proactive approach. The Sky Blues play a 4-2-3-1 system which enables them to control the midfield and press opponents high up the pitch.
With Matt Grimes acting as the pivot and creative spark, Coventry are very strong in midfield, where they can play off Haji Wright, arguably the best player in the league. Wright is their biggest threat going forward, having scored 16 goals in 36 Championship 2025-2026 games, and it’s no surprise to see Coventry top of the Championship 2025/2026 with 85 points from 42 games.
Portsmouth lack quality up top
Portsmouth, by contrast, sit 19th with 48 points from 42 matches, but they have given themselves a chance of avoiding the drop with their form over the past month. John Mousinho has made Pompey a tough nut to crack since taking over in January 2023, when he instilled a results-first mentality and an emphasis on physicality and winning the ball back in transition.
Marlon Pack provides the senior experience and ball-winning quality that Pompey need in their midfield, usually setting the tone for the game. But top scorer Adrian Segecic has only managed five goals in 34 Championship 2025-2026 appearances and doesn’t look like a clear and present danger up front.
Sky Blues should have the edge
This isn’t one of the classic Championship 2025-2026 rivalries, but both clubs have plenty to play for at opposite ends of the table. Coventry City are rightful favourites at 59/100 because of their much higher league position and home form. Pompey’s away form is questionable and they have never won at Coventry City in the Championship 2025-2026.
Coventry’s home form has slipped a bit of late with only one win, one draw and one defeat in their last three at home, while Portsmouth have two wins, two draws and a defeat in their last five. But Pompey’s recent results include two consecutive victories, so confidence in the Pompey camp is high. Still, the Sky Blues’ extra quality and more clinical approach should see them through.
