Kettering can make the most of the step up
With Southern League Premier Division Central set to begin in 2026-2027, Kettering Town FC and Leighton Town look to be on a similar playing field in the early stages of the season. Kettering are a step ahead as an already established side at the third tier of English football while Leighton won promotion to this level for the first time in club history with a return of 100 points and 109 league goals. It will be interesting to see how Paul Reed's side, who like to play with a degree of structure and patience, cope with the step up in class and the faster and more pressurised style of play that will be commonplace in the league. Leighton have been in blistering pre-season form, thrashing Arlesey Town 9-1 last week and then putting four past Winslow United on Saturday, but they will face stronger, faster pressure in the coming campaign.
Leighton are more exposed in the final third
The loss of Godlove Oppong has changed the face of Leighton's attack considerably and replacing the 30 league goals he scored last term will be the challenge of the Premier Division Central season for the hosts. They still have some of the traits that helped them get promoted with Kyal Williams and Sydney Ibie are both crafty players for their number 10 roles.
Kettering have the deeper pool of attacking talent at Step 3 and Liam McDonald's side are set to play at a higher tempo with the ball and press from the front when out of possession. The Poppies should win this clash if they can get enough pressure on Leighton to upset their rhythm and cause problems in transition.
The betting odds of 53/50 for the visitors and 199/100 for the home side look all wrong and the 71/100 on over 2.5 goals looks too low for what should be a lively opener. Both teams to score is my first selection because of the attacking potential in both sides, but the smart play is to go with a narrow Kettering win and 2-1 away is the way to go as Leighton's first-ever home clash at Step 3 could easily turn into a battle.
