- Stoke City U21 are on a two-match winning streak at home, beating Southampton Academy 1-0 in their last game four days ago.
- Aston Villa U21 have lost one of their last five PL2 matches (W3, D1, L1).
- The last two PL2 meetings between these sides have ended all square, including a 1-1 draw at Stoke's ground last season.
A battle of contrasting styles
Stoke City U21 and Aston Villa U21 have very different styles, and the clash between Darren Potter’s high-tempo, direct attacking approach and Josep Gombau’s more patient, possession-based style could lead to an open and entertaining game on Friday.
Stoke’s boss took over the U21 side in November of 2024 and he has instilled his own identity on the young Potters, who play with tempo, directness, and a threat on the counter-attack. Potter’s side have been more consistent of late, winning two and losing three of their last five Premier League 2 matches, and have a home record of 4 wins, 1 draw, and 4 losses this season.
Villa are strong on the road
Aston Villa U21 have been much more consistent this season, and the two-touch passing style implemented by Gombau, who took over the Villa U21 helm in January 2024, has been a mirror image of Unai Emery’s senior side.
Villa sit 15th in PL2 with 28 points from 19 games, while Stoke are a further three points adrift in 19th place. However, Villa have been in much better form lately, losing one, drawing one, and winning three of their last five PL2 outings.
Villans have the quality to edge it
Villa’s away record in PL2 is exceptional for a side in the bottom-half of the table, with the Villans losing just one of their nine matches on their travels this season (W5, D3, L1).
The hosts have won four, drawn one, and lost four of their home fixtures in the league proper this term, conceding an average of 2.00 goals per game. Aston Villa U21 average 1.67 goals scored and 1.11 goals conceded on the road, and they should have enough quality to get the better of Stoke City U21.
Bradley Burrowes has been Villa’s main man up front, netting two of their six goals across the last five games, while Jerome Kyremeh has been Stoke’s primary threat, scoring three of their eight goals in the same period. Gombau’s side are the better team and should win at a shade of odds-on, although Potter’s team are in good form at home, so it may pay to take the away side to win in a closely fought game.
There is a lot of value on the ‘Both teams to score: Yes’ market at 33/100, as both sides will look to get forward and the contrasting styles of these young charges should create chances at both ends.
