Stourbridge face a stern test in opening fixture
Stourbridge and Stamford both begin their 2026-27 Southern Football League Premier Division Central season on Saturday with zero points on the board and a desperate need for a spark to kickstart the campaign.
Stourbridge's pre-season form was mixed to poor as they opened up with a win over Sporting Khalsa before losing at Chasetown, beating Stourport Swifts and losing to Sutton Coldfield and Kidderminster Harriers 0-5. Scott Adey-Linforth will be pleased if his team get going with a much more respectable performance this weekend.
Dom Lewis is their engine room and key player, dictating the game's rhythm and orchestrating transitions. Stourbridge are set up to be pragmatic and flexible, able to change shape and press at various times, depending on the situation. They'll have enough attacking power with Isaac Olaleye and Toumani Sidibe providing most of the goal threat, but Charlie Price will need to be at his best in goal.
Stamford's pre-season was a little more steady, but still a bit up and down as they held Blackstones to a draw, lost 1-0 to Peterborough Sports and drew with AFC Rushden & Diamonds. They have a bit more momentum heading into the season opener, which is the biggest positive they will carry into this game.
Best bet is on a cagey contest
Anthony Fenton has Stamford playing a compact, disciplined style with a narrow structure. They will be organised, with the ball rolling out of the midfield to Joao Varela's creativity in the number ten role, where he will be backed up by Kai Tonge, Luke Johnson and Michael Frew's pace and end product up top.
The recent H2H will stay with the visitors after they beat Stourbridge 3-1 in November 2025 and 2-0 in December 2024 prior to a 1-1 stalemate in February 2026. The H2H record since 2015 is also with the Stamford (W5, D4, L2 from 11 meetings) and we feel they are more likely to win this.
However, Stourbridge have some good players and the home crowd may be able to get them going. Stamford are 341/100 favourites against a Stourbridge team that are 33/50, which is a little surprising with the draw set at 67/25. The draw would be our pick in the match result market but the 47/50 for under 2.5 goals makes a lot more sense and is the best bet in this early-season clash of styles.
