Black Cats are on a mission
Sunderland U21 boss Graeme Murty’s attacking mindset and high-pressing game has made his young team a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League 2 Division 2025-2026 season.
The Black Cats have won four of their last five games and are currently sitting in 12th spot on 27 points from 18 games, having scored 38 and conceded 36 goals.
They have some top-flight quality in their ranks and enough of it to be in with a shout of climbing the table to showcase some of the talent in their academy to the first-team boss.
Jack Whittaker and Finn Geragusyan are the engine room for the high-tempo pressing and transition game and have consistently earned high ratings.
Tymur Tutierov leads the Sunderland U21 goal charts with six league goals this term and is the forward with the most consistent eye for the on target pass.
Ahmed Abdullahi offers a lively option behind Tutierov and he has contributed four league goals this year.
Reading are desperate for consistency
Reading U21 are a long way from their rivals in the table, sitting in 20th place with 21 points from 18 matches. They have scored 23 goals and conceded 33, although boss Peter Scott has found a compact, possession-light way to get the best out of his squad. They will sit deep, look for direct counter attacks and be efficient in the set-piece areas when they can’t hold on to the ball.
Sean Patton is the next biggest threat to the goal for Reading U21 and he is a good counter-attacker.
Jeremiah Okine-Peters and David Hicks provide good quality as creative outlets, both registering recent assists.
Reading have won three of their last four head-to-head Premier League 2 meetings with Sunderland U21, including a 2-1 victory away in February 2025. Their form has been mixed, however, with two wins and three losses in their last five, and they have the additional pressure of a relegation battle on their backs that could make the difference in this clash.
High-scoring clash expected at Eppleton
Sunderland U21 are clear favourites to win this game at 13/20, but Reading U21 are priced at 137/50 and the draw 16/5, which seems a little short given Reading's current form. Sunderland have shown they are capable of blowing teams away on their own patch, but Reading have the urgency of a team fighting to stay up and will be on the lookout for Sunderland to make mistakes in transition.
We’re going with Over 2.5 goals for this game at a massive 7/20, a price that is too low to ignore given Sunderland U21 have been scoring plenty at home recently and the head-to-heads have averaged over 4 goals per game since February 2024. The Black Cats can squeeze past Reading by a goal or two and we’re backing a 1-0 or 2-1 result to Sunderland.
