Canada finally did it and got over the line in a World Cup knockout game, which is massive for them no matter what happens next. It might not have been a classic for the neutral, but these are the kinds of moments that stick forever for a national team and its supporters.

Eustáquio getting the winner has to be the headline, and you could feel how much it meant from the reactions. South Africa will feel hard done by in places, but Canada have earned the right to enjoy this one and take their place in the round of 16.

There will be plenty saying they get battered next round, and maybe they do, but that does not take away from what this means. For Canada this is proper history, and for once the celebration feels bigger than the performance itself.

From a footballing point of view, Canada managed the game really well once they got in front and South Africa never really found a way to speed it up or force chaos in the final third, so the result is fair enough. But you can also see why people are calling it a dull watch, because there was so much sideways stuff and so much fear in both teams at times, and then suddenly the whole thing becomes about one moment and one finish and one massive release of pressure, which is what knockout football is all about really, but bloody hell some of those passages were painful and I swear if I had to watch another ten minutes of that I’d have started throwing cushions at the telly

Canada were organised and patient, which mattered more than trying to force it. South Africa sat off too much and never really stretched the game, so once the winner went in there was only one side that looked comfortable managing the tempo.

people acting like this was some masterpiece when half the match felt like watching two lads argue over who has to press first and then nobody actually does it and Canada just nick it and suddenly everyone is talking about history like it was a proper epic

The key was Canada not panicking after a flat spell and just keeping their shape when South Africa tried to slow everything down, because that sort of game can turn horrible fast if you start chasing it. Once they got the breakthrough it became about game management and they handled that side of it better

You can talk about the performance and the tempo and all the rest of it, but for Canada this is a genuine landmark and that has to be respected. For years people were laughing at the idea of them doing anything at this level and now they have a World Cup knockout win in the bag and the whole mood around the team has changed. Yes, the next round could be brutal and yes, a lot of neutrals will already be writing them off, but that misses the point completely because these moments matter to a footballing nation and you could see how much it meant to the players and fans and that is the bit people will remember, not the moaning about how pretty it looked or whether it was good enough for some self appointed football purist on the internet

Canada looked more decisive in the key moments, and that was enough. South Africa had spells but never turned them into real pressure.
